Introduction

Inula helenium, Linn. Natural order: Compositae. Common names: Elecampane; (Germ) Plant. Preparation: Tincture of the root.

Mind

The former peevishness changed, from a slight cause, to a joyous mood and good humor (second day).

Head

Confusion of the whole head, with nausea rising form the stomach, in the evening (first day). Vertigo, on stooping (after three hours). Rush of blood to the head causes sleeplessness for two nights. Tearing, throbbing pain in the forehead and whole top of the head, after eating (second day). Burrowing headache in the left temple, in a spot as large as a thaler, in the evening (first day). Headache in the right side, afterwards in the left (second day). Sticking headache in the right side (second day). Jerking, tearing pain in the occiput, afterwards extending to the occiput, towards the ear.

Eyes

Twitching in both upper lids, momentary, so that she was obliged to press the eyes together (after eight hours). Burning in the left eyeball (after twenty-one hours). Swimming before the eyes, and pressure in the temples and forehead.

Ears

Dull stitches in the left ear, with transient sticking above the right eyebrow, in the evening (first day).

Nose

Stitches in the right side of the middle of the nose (after four hours). Sticking crawling in the root of the nose, extending to the eyebrows, lasting several minutes (twenty day). Face. Left side of the face red and hot, a white spot near the nose (eighth hour). Obstruction of the nostrils, with smarting and sensation of heat in the left side of the throat (after eighty-six minutes).

Face

Left side of the face red and hot, a white spot near the nose (eight hour).

Mouth

Teeth. Pain in all the hollow teeth, at times through the whole proving, alternately coming and going for twenty-six days, mostly at night when waking, not only in the teeth but also in the gum. Very transient violent boring in the 1st left hollow back teeth, in the evening (second day). Itching, throbbing, hammering in the left upper and lower jaw, in two hollow back teeth, every night about 11 o’clock (from eighth to thirty-third day). General Month. Dryness of the mouth (in two proves), (after a quarter of an hour). Dryness of the mouth, with scrapping and tickling in the throat, so that swallowing was difficult; nausea in the stomach, at 7 A.M. (second day). Taste. Taste as of violet root in the mouth (after two hours).

Throat

On swallowing, pain in the throat, which seems swollen, lasting through the night till morning. Tickling in the throat causing constant cough (thirteenth and fourteenth) day).

Stomach

(Her usual nausea in the morning, coming from the stomach, disappeared), (after second day). Twisting as with a ball in the epigastric region, above the umbilicus. Sticking pain in the epigastric region (after six hours). Slight nausea, with pain over the eyes (after six minutes).

Abdomen

Hypochondria. Violent motion internally beneath the right hypochondrium, as though something living were moving about, during menstruation (after eighteen days). Umbilical. Sticking as with two pins o the right of the umbilicus (after three hours). General Abdomen. A feeling in the abdomen as though menstruation would occur (seven days after menstruation ), (after twenty-four days. Movings about the abdomen as if menstruation would occur (ten days after menstruation). Movings about in the abdomen, as at the appearance of menstruation, followed by yellowish leucorrhoea (fifth day). Rumbling in the abdomen (in two provers), (after half an hour). Rumbling and fermentation in the abdomen, immediately. Pain in the abdomen with very profuse leucorrhoea, colored like whey, and slimy. Tensive pain, sometimes intermitting, on the right side of the abdomen, especially in the ligaments (after eight hours). Tensive pain in the abdomen, especially in the right loin, and also over the whole external public region, especially when walking about (after six hours). Tensive pain in the abdomen followed by discharge of yellowish mucus from the vagina (after three hours). Griping and rumbling in the abdomen. Griping in the abdomen, with ineffectual urging to stool (twenty-ninth day). Hypogastrium. Sticking pain in a small spot as large as a thaler, between the umbilicus and right groin, as from a knife, lasting two days (after thirteen days). Stitches in the left side of the abdomen, towards the left groin (after fourteen days). A stitch in the region of the right groin, extend ing o the umbilicus, on every step.

Rectum and Anus

Pressing dragging towards the rectum and genitals, as in labor; as if a substance would come out, occurring repeatedly (from two to thirty days). Urging to stool, with cutting pain, not followed by stool (after twenty-three days). Urging to stool, followed by a large pasty stool with griping about the umbilicus, in the evening (second day).

Stool

Diarrhoea for two days and one night. Stools small, numerous, burning, with urging, very unusual (after twenty-four days). Stool yellow, pasty, scanty, like an infant’s with urging, without pain (twenty-first day). Stools hard, was obliged to press them out (twenty-fourth day).

Urinary organs

Urging to urinate ten times in one hour; the urine passes by drops (second day). The urine smells of violets.

Sexual organs

Pain in the uterus, with pain in the small of the back, very violent, with pressure as in labor; urging to stool, which she dreads; she is obliged to remain lying. Stitching in the region of the uterus (after five hours). Stitches in the uterus as with a fork, lasting several minutes, in the evening (after nine hours, first day). Dragging in the genitals, with more violent backache than ever had before (in an unmarried girl), (second day). Stitches at times in the pudenda (twenty-ninth day). Three stitches in succession in the genitals (second and sixth days). Menstruation five days too early (after sixteen days). Menstruation five days too early, preceded by colic for three days; everything in the abdomen is gathered into a lump (in two female provers), (after thirty-five days). Menstruation three to six days too early, with colic, especially at night. Menstruation three days too early, preceded by pain for two days. Menstruation delayed one day (after twelve days). Paroxysmal clotted discharge during the first days of menstruation.

Respiratory organs

A child was attacked with cough (second day). Dry cough, with constant tickling in the pit of the throat, difficult breathing, and a sensation as though hoarseness would occur (after two days).

Chest

Pain below the right ribs, with heat of the right cheek (after nine days) Stitches beneath the left, seventh, and eighth ribs, lasting half an hour (after one hour and a half). Throbbing, jerking pain, as from suppuration, in the middle of the chest (second day). Transient stitches behind the sternum, aggravated by motion (after four hours). Pain in the right side of the chest, especially towards the shoulder, during menstruation (after twenty days). Pain in the nipple (after eight days).

Back

Pain through the back and chest, on inspiration (after five hours). Violent backache during menstruation, excessive anxiety with trembling of the whole body, and chattering of the teeth from cold (after sixteen days). Transient pain in the right scapula (five hours). Pain in the small of the back (after sixth and twenty-fourth days). Sticking pain in part of both loins, as if menstruation would occur (six days after menstruation ), (after twenty-fourth day).

Superior Extremities

Pain in the right shoulder (in two provers). (after six hours). Stitches in the right shoulder-joint (after one hour and a half). Tearing in the right shoulder and alternately in the right wrist. Pain like a tearing and like a cramp in the tip of the left shoulder, in the scaleni muscles on the left side of the neck, like a cramp or as if pulled by pincers. Tearing jerking in the right arm, mostly in the deltoid (twenty-eighth day). The upper arm as far as the elbow falls asleep (first day) The right upper arms falls asleep, raising the arm is difficult (after nineteen hours). Falling asleep of the left upper arm like formication (first day). Tearing in the palm of the left hand, so that it makes the fingers stiff and she is unable to double them up; pressure relieves the pain (second day). Fine stitches in the index finger (after six days). Tearing in the right little finger, the finger seems dead (after twenty four days).

Inferior Extremities

Tensive drawing in the hips extending to the nates (second day). Sticking in the right hip, extending through to the right groin (second day). Stitches in the thighs (after two hours). Spasmodic sticking pain beneath the bend of the right knee, with heat of the face and chilliness of the body (first day) Cramp in the calves, at night in sleep. Drawing pain, beginning in the forepart of the right leg, extending from the knee up to the right groin and ending behind the arch of the pubis. Stitches in the left ankle, when walking, as if sprained (after eight days). Sharp stitches in the left side of the left malleolus, transient (after fifty-four hours)> Stitches, as with needles, in the right heel (ninth day). Sticking pain in the two middle toes of the right foot, extending to the middle of the sole, afterwards in the heel, lasting two days.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
