The nasal orifices are frequently the seat of dermatitis seborrhoica, eczema, rosacea, herpes simplex and furunculus and less often of lepra, glanders, erysipelas, syphilis, tuberculosis cutis, gangosa and rhinoscleroma. In many instances, these diseases spread to the nasal cavities by direct extension from the surrounding cutaneous surface, but in a few instances, primary manifestations, such as the initial lesions of syphilis, glanders or leprosy, have undoubtedly developed in the nasal passages. It is reasonable to believe that, as scientific data regarding the causation of the so-called infectious diseases is gathered, our knowledge of the receptive properties of the nasal cavities will reach a more complete understanding. The nose, as a portion of the respiratory tract, must necessarily receive impure as well as pure air, disease- breeding germs as well as harmless bacteria.
