Mind

      Wild delirium, with distorted countenance.

Much depression of spirits, especially with the colic.

Quiet and melancholic mood.

Anxiety, with restlessness and yawning.

Sensorium

      Stupefaction of head, he falls down unconscious.

Vertigo, especially on stooping, or when looking upward.

Inner Head

      Heaviness of head, especially in cerebellum.

Congestion of blood to head, with heat and beating in it.

Headache as if a ball was rising from throat into brain.

Paralysis occurring early; cerebro-spinal meningitis.

Meningitis, chronic, when the paralyzed parts soon fall away in flesh, the limbs become painfully contracted; frequent spells of colic with retraction of the abdomen.

Outer Head

      Great dryness of hair, it falls off even in beard.

Eyes

      Cloudiness before the eyes, inducing one to rest them.

Ophthalmia, lachrymation, photophobia, redness of the whole ball.

Yellowness of whites of eyes.

Pupils contracted.

Hypopyon after iritis; nightly tearing pains in eye and forehead.

Eyeball feels too large.

Lids spasmodically contracted.

Paralysis of the upper lids.

Ears

      Stitches and tearing in ears.

Hardness of hearing; often sudden deafness.

Nose

      Erysipelatous inflammation of nose; vesicles on alae.

Fetid odor before nose.

Much tough mucus in nose, which can only be discharged through posterior nares.

Cold nose.

Face

      Face pale, yellowish, like a corpse.

Bloated face. Swelling of one side of face.

The skin of the face is greasy, shining.

Painless peeling off of the lips.

Lower Face

      Lock-jaw.

Tearing in jaws, relieved by rubbing them.

Teeth

      Grinding of the teeth.

The teeth become black.

Yellow mucus on teeth.

Teeth hollow, decayed, crumbling off, and smelling offensively.

Gums : swollen; show a lead-colored line; painful, with hard tubercles.

Tongue etc.

      Taste sweetish.

Tongue : dry, brown, cracked; coated yellow or green; inflamed, swollen; heavy, paralyzed; hurts as if bitten.

Mouth

      Accumulation of sweetish saliva in mouth. Froth in mouth.

Dryness of mouth.

Aphthae, dirty-looking ulcers, and purple blotches in mouth and on tip of tongue.

Throat

      Constriction in throat when trying to swallow, with great urging to do so.

Sensation of a plug in throat. Globus hystericus.

Tonsils inflamed, covered with small, painful abscesses.

Diphtheria, with tendency to sloughing.

Tough mucus in fauces and posterior nares. Angina granulosa, going from left to right.

Fluids can be swallowed, but solids come back into mouth; burning in oesophagus and stomach some hours after eating; stricture from spasm.

Desires Aversions

      Great hunger.

No appetite, but violent thirst.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating :.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations: empty; sweetish.

Gulping up of sweetish water.

Vomiting : of food and of discolored substances, with violent colic; of food in morning, with great weakness; of greenish and blackish substances; or of a thick white substance, like white of egg in chronic gastritis.

Vomit has a fecal odor.

Stomach

      Violent pressure in stomach, and pain in back; at times better bending backward, at others bending forward; better from hard pressure.

Abdomen.

      Violent colic, abdomen drawn in, as if by a string, to the spine.

Cutting, contractive pains, with restless tossing; better from rubbing, or hard pressure.

Constriction of intestines, naval violently retracted.

Abdomen hard as a stone; knots in recti muscles; anxious, with cold sweat and deathly faintness.

Large, hard swelling in ileo-coecal region, painful to touch and motion. Typhlitis.

Inflammation and gangrene of bowels.

Incarcerated hernia.

Intussusception, with colic and fecal vomiting.

Stool etc.

      Stool; fetid yellow and fecal; watery with vomiting and violent colic; bloody masses; watery dark offensive.

Constipation, stools hard, lumpy, like sheep’s dung; with urging and terrible pain from constriction or spasms of anus.

Light colored stools Jaundice.

Fissures of the anus.

Anus feels as if drawn upward.

Urine

      Morbus Brightii, contracted kidney.

Diabetes.

Necrotic cystitis from decomposed urea.

Urine: passes in drops strangury; will not pass, as from atony of the bladder; dribbles, is high – colored and fetid.

Male Sexual Organs

      Increased desire and violent erections.

Impotence.

Testicles drawn up; feel constricted.

Genitals swollen and inflamed.

Female Sexual Organs

      Cessation of menses on invasion of colic may re-appear after paroxysm or not again till next period.

Menorrhagia, with sensation of a string pulling from abdomen to back.

Wants to stretch limbs during ovarian pains; ovarian dropsy.

Climacteric period: dark clots alternately with fluid blood or bloody serum, with sensation of fulness in pelvis and slight bearing down pain in small of back.

Pregnancy

      Feeling as if there was not room enough in abdomen at night in bed must stretch violently.

Abortion from lead poisoning or the child lives but a year or two.

Larynx

      Constriction of larynx.

Aphonia from paralysis of the vocal cords.

Breathing

      Want of breath; oppression from motion; short-breathed on going up stairs.

Heavy difficult breathing.

Spasmodic dyspnoea.

Cough

      With expectoration of blood or of pus after hemorrhage from the lungs; dry, spasmodic; worse lying on back and after getting out of bed in morning.

Lungs

      Stitches in chest and sides.

Copious muco-serous or purulent expectoration.

Suppuration of lungs.

Circumscribed pulmonary mortification; also cheesy pneumonia.

Heart Pulse

      Rush of blood to heart, during a rapid walk; anguish, cold sweat; stitches during inspiration; hypertrophy.

Pulse: variable, generally small and slow; contracted; at times hard and slow; at others small and accelerated; sinks even to 4o.

Neck Back

      Tension in neck, extending to ears, when moving head.

Pains in back, better sometimes by bending forward, at others by bending backward.

Stitches in back and small of back.

Upper Limbs

      Convulsive motion of arms and hands with pain in joints.

Weakness and painful lameness of arms.

Wens on the hands.

Lower Limbs

      Drawing, pressive pains in sciatic nerve down to knee with difficult walking and great exhaustion afterward; tubercular diathesis, with dry, hacking cough.

Sciatica, when there is marked consecutive muscular atrophy; or earlier, when walking causes great exhaustion.

Cramps in the calves.

Swelling of the feet.

Fetid foot-sweat.

Limbs in General

      The pains in limbs are worse at night and are relieved by rubbing.

Paralytic weakness in extremities especially on right side; hands and feet cold; total want of sweat.

Position etc.

      Inclination to take the strangest attitudes and position in bed.

Nerves

      Paralysis:preceded by mental derangement, trembling, spasms or by shooting, darting intense tearing pains in tracks of larger nerves; the parts emaciate; wrist-drop; caused by apoplexy, sclerosis of the brain or progressive muscular atrophy; alternating with colic.

Epilepsy, chronic forms; before the spell, legs heavy and numb tongue swollen; afterward, long-lasting, stupid feeling in the head.

Sleep

      Somnolency Great sleepiness during the day., Sleeplessness at night from colic.

Temperature and Weather

      Open air: Internal chill with external heat: Into bed:.

Chill Fever Sweat

      Chill predominates increasing toward evening, with violent thirst and redness of face.

Coldness in open air and when exercising.

Heat with thirst, anxiety, redness of face, and sleepiness.

Internal heat in evening and at night, with yellowness of the buccal cavity.

Sweat anxious cold and clammy or want of sweat.

Sweat comes and goes, as soon as he gets into bed.

      The ailments develop themselves slowly and intermit for a time; intermission every third day.

      Lead poisoning is antidoted by; Alumen, Alum, Opium., Petrol., Nux vomica, Platin, Ant-crud., Coccul., Zincum.

Alcohol as a preventive.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
