Mind

      Everything seems strange and horrible to her.

She thinks all persons are demons.

Illusion : everything around her is very small and every body inferior to her in mind and body.

Delirium with fear of men, often changing with overestimation of oneself.

Disturbed state of mind, also religious, with taciturnity, haughtiness, voluptuousness and cruelty.

Mania, with great pride; fault-finding; unchaste talk; trembling and clonic spasms; caused by fright or anger.

Mood changing; cheerful or depressed.

Low-spirited, inclined to shed tears, worse in the evening; weeps with the pains.

Past events trouble her.

Much anguish; she feels as if she would lose her senses and die soon.

Satiety of life, with (taciturnity and ) fear of death.

Great indifference.

Pride and overestimation of oneself; looking down with haughtiness on others.

Physical symptoms disappear, and mental symptoms appear, and vice versa.

After anger, alternate laughing and weeping, with great anguish and fear of death.

Mental disturbance after fright, grief or vexation.

Inner Head

      Sensation of numbness in head and externally on vertex, preceded by a sensation of contraction of the brain scalp; worse in evening and while sitting; better from motion and in open air.

Neuralgic headache in sensitive or hysterical persons; cramp- like pressing inwards, with hot and red face, and roaring in head; pains gradually increase and as gradually decrease.

Numb feeling in the brain.

Sensation of water in the forehead.

Outer Head

      Formication in one temple, extending to lower jaw, with sensation of coldness on that spot; worse in evening and when at rest, better from rubbing.

Eyes

      Scintillations before the eyes; headache.

Sensation of coldness in the eyes.

Spasmodic trembling and twitching of the eyelids.

Objects appear smaller than they really are.

Ears

      Ringing, rolling or rumbling sound in the ears.

Thundering jerks like distant cannonade, in right ear.

Otalgia with cramp-pain, often with rumbling in the ears.

Sensation of coldness in ears, with sensation of numbness extending to cheeks and lips.

Nose

      Numbness and cramp-pain in nose.

Violent crampy pain at root of nose, with heat and red face.

Corrosive sensation on nose, as from something acrid.

Face

      Pale, sunken; red and burning hot, with violent thirst, worse toward evening.

Sensation of coldness, tingling and numbness in one (right) side of face.

Cramp-pain, steady compressing, numb feeling and boring in malar bones.

Lower Face

      Purple, net-like appearance on chin.

Teeth

      Pulsating, digging through whole right jaw, worse toward evening and at rest; followed by numbness; pains come and go gradually.

Tongue etc.

      Sensation as if the tongue were scalded.

Sweet taste on the tip of the tongue.

Mouth

      Rhagades in the gums.

Sensation of coldness, especially in the mouth.

Throat

      Cramp-like drawing in the throat, as if it were constricted.

Hawking of mucus, with scraping in throat.

Sensation as if the palate was elongated.

Desires Aversions

      Loss of appetite on account of depressed mood.

Ravenous appetite and hasty eating, detests everything around him.

Thirstlessness; or, thirst during heat.

Eating and Drinking

      Worse on an empty stomach.

After meals :.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations empty, morning.

Continuous nausea, with great weakness, anxiety and trembling sensation, through the whole body.

Stomach

      Pressure in stomach, especially after meals.

Sensation of constriction in pit of the stomach and in abdomen.

Burning in pit of stomach, extending into abdomen.

Jactitation of muscles in region of stomach.

Abdomen

      Painter’s colic; pain in umbilical region, extending through into back; patient screams and tries to relieve the pain by turning into all possible positions.

Pressing and bearing down in abdomen, extending into pelvis.

Stool etc.

      Constipation; after lead poisoning; or while travelling; frequent urging, with expulsion of only small portions of feces, with great straining.

After an evacuation, sensation of great weakness in abdomen, or chilliness.

Itching-tingling and tenesmus at anus, especially in the evening.

Stools adhere to rectum and anus like soft clay.

Urine

      Frequent micturition, with slow flow of urine.

Urine : pale, watery; red, with white clouds; turbid, depositing a red sediment.

Male Sexual Organs

      Sexual desire excessive, with violent erections, especially at night.

Embrace with but little pleasurable excitement.

Morbid excitement inducing onanism, especially if prepubic.

Female Sexual Organs

      Nymphomania, worse in the lying-in; tingling or titillation from genitals up into abdomen.

Painful sensitiveness and continual pressure in region of mons veneris and genital organs; body, except the face, feels cold. Prolapsus uteri.

Induration of the uterus; ulceration, with co-existing ovarian irritation.

Ovaries inflamed with burning pains in paroxysms, stitches in the forehead. Also chronic ovaritis.

Frequent sensation as if the menses would appear.

Menses too early, too profuse and too short-lasting; flow dark, clotted; preceded by spasms, much bearing down, desire for stool, or backache; during the flow, pinching in abdomen, excruciating pains in uterus, twitchings, with screams; melancholy.

Metrorrhagia, the body feels as if growing large; genitals very sensitive; nymphomania.

Hemorrhages in clots, with uterine cancer, fibroids, etc.; even the fibroid may be cured.

Leucorrhoea like white of egg, only by day, after urination and after rising from a seat.

Pruritis vulvae; voluptuous tingling, with anxiety and palpitation of the heart.

Vulva painfully sensitive during coitus.

Pregnancy

      Contractions interrupted by sensitiveness of vagina and external parts; labor-pains; spasmodic, painful, but ineffectual.

After labor, so sensitive, she cannot bear touch of napkin.

Larynx

      Loss of voice.

Spasm of the glottis.

Breathing

      Difficult, anxious respiration.

Shortness of breath, as if the chest was constricted.

Deep breathing from sensation as of a weight on the chest.

Cough

      Hysterical dry cough, from stifling beneath upper fourth of sternum.

Lungs

      Cramp-pain in left chest, gradually increasing and decreasing in intensity.

Heart Pulse

      Great anxiety and palpitation; commencing endo or pericarditis Pulse regular, but small and weak, sometimes tremulous.

Neck Back

      Nape of neck weak; head inclines forward.

Cramp in posterior muscles of neck; tensive, numb feeling close to occiput, as if tied together.

Pains in back and small of back, as if bruised or broken; worse from pressure or bending forward.

Pressing from small of back upon the pelvic organs.

Pain in small of back, going to groins and down limbs.

Numbness in sacrum and coccyx.

Upper Limbs

      Weak, relaxed feeling in both arms, as after holding a heavy weight, better from motion of arms.

Sore burning at the elbow, as if scraped.

Lower Limbs

      Weakness of thighs and knees, as if beaten.

Pain like after a severe blow, in left knee.

Tremulous restlessness in legs, with numb and torpid feeling when sitting; worse evenings.

Numb and tired feeling in feet, only while sitting.

Limbs in General

      Tension in limbs, as if wrapped tightly.

Cramp-like pains; numbness in limbs and joints.

Spasmodic, jerking and drawing pains in limbs and joints.

Ulcers on fingers and toes.

Position etc.

      Motion : Assumes every position: Rising from a seat : Bending forward : Rest :, Sitting : Lies on back : with knees drawn up and spread apart: with hands over head, thighs drawn up and legs uncovered :.

Nerves

      Spasmodic affections of hysterical women and of children: tetanic-like spasms, with wild shrieks, alternating with catalepsy; spasms alternating with dyspnoea to suffocation; twitches of single muscles, trembling, shivering; worse at dawn.

Spasms from sexual erethism.

Tonic spasm, without loss of consciousness; face pale, sunken; child, after the spell, lies on its back, kicks off the clothes, and draws up its knees and spreads them apart.

Paralytic weakness, worse at rest; numbness; stiffness and coldness.

Sleep

      Great inclination to violent, almost spasmodic yawning.

Awakes, at night and has difficulty in collecting his senses.

During sleep, lies on back, arms over head, thighs drawn up, and with legs uncovered.

Intense nervous wakefulness.

Time

Temperature and Weather

      Open air; Uncovered : Warm air :.

Chill Fever Sweat

      Chill in evening, with trembling and tremulous feeling through whole body.

Shaking chill when going from room into open, even warm, air.

Chilliness predominates, with irritability, which ceases during the heat.

Heat, with sensation of burning in face, without any visible change in color of face.

Flushes of heat, interrupted by chilliness.

Gradually increasing, and in like manner decreasing heat.

Sweat only during sleep, ceases on wakening.

Attacks

      Pains increase and decrease slowly and gradually.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
