Mind

      Stupor, delirium, grasping at flocks.

Hysterical alternation of laughing and weeping.

Great indifference; answers no questions, or replies wrongly.

Gloomy, taciturn. Dejection, thought he would die.

Fearfulness, as if something were creeping out of every corner.

Anxious, restless: at twilight; when alone; about the future; during a thunder-storm; with palpitation.

Melancholy, sheds tears; or, with attacks of involuntary laughter.

Amativeness.

Apathy: indifference, even toward his own children.

Excitable, easily angered and vehement, from which he afterwards suffers.

Mind is overactive.

Irritability of mind and body; prostrated from the least unpleasant impression.

While reflecting, headache and dyspnoea; feeling of apprehension at pit of stomach; weak feeling in head.

Any lively impression is followed by heat, as if immersed in hot water.

Sensorium

      Nervous vertigo; or vertigo from abuse of narcotics, coffee; also, on rising from bed, or a seat, with fainting; worse mornings and after meals.

Confusion as from watching; confusion and heaviness, worse in vertex and sinciput; vertigo, tendency to fall forward. Better in cold air and with head uncovered. Apoplexy, grasps at the head; mouth drawn to the left.

Inner Head

      Cold, crampy pain on whole left side of head.

Sensation of coldness in cerebellum, with sensation of stiffness in the brain.

Pulsation in left temple. Headache over left eye.

Headache every other day.

Weight and throbbing in forehead on waking, better by cold washing, worse on stooping; sometimes lasts all day.

Impending paralysis of brain and collapse; burning pain in brain.

Congestion to head; burning, stinging pains and pulsations commencing in occiput.

Sick headache with pulsations and burning, mostly in forehead; with nausea and vomiting, from morning until noon; worse from music, while masticating and in warm room.

Hot vertex after grief.

Headache in forehead as if a weight pressed it down into the eyes.

Softening of brain, with persistent headache, slow answering questions, vertigo, feet drag, formication, numbness in the limbs.

Acute atrophy of brain and medulla oblongata, with uraemia.

Outer Head

      Scaly, bald spots on the head.

Head affected: from taking cold; from remaining in hot rooms; after having the hair cut.

Tension in face and skin of forehead, frequent only one side; worse from change of temperature and while eating; better after eating; with anxiety.

Dandruff copious, falls out in clouds; roots of hair get grey and hair comes out in bunches; scratching makes itching worse, or burning and itching relieved at time, but worse after scratching.

Eyes

      When reading, letters look red.

After reading, dull pain deep in eyes; black spots pass before the eyes, worse from looking at bright objects and in lamplight; better in twilight.

Contracted pupils.

Glaucoma.

Momentary blindness, as from fainting.

Amblyopia from loss of fluids; also in morbus Brightii.

Has stopped rapidly increasing myopia.

Paroxysms of nyctalopia; or, of a sensation as if things were covered with a gray veil.

Green halo around the candle.

Subacute conjunctivitis, lachrymation; swelling and suppuration of lids, and meibomian glands, with itching and burning pains.

Aching in eyes, forehead and orbits.

Small burning spots on the eyeballs.

Fungus oculi.

Eyelids tremble and quiver; eyes fill with tears.

Ears

      Difficult hearing, especially of human voice; also after typhus: hardness of hearing, with cold extremities.

Sounds reverberate in the ears; especially music.

Shooting through ears, especially at night; ear-discharges.

Congestion to ears, with throbbing.

Noises in ears, roaring, from rush of blood, Polypi in the ears.

Nose

      Coryza: fluent, dulness of head, sleepiness, especially during the day and after meals; blowing blood from nose; alternating fluent and dry, with frequent sneezing; dry, forming crusts, adhering firmly; profuse discharge, flowing down into fauces; neck swollen; eyes staring, consequent on the resulting, stagnation of blood; scarlatina.

Profuse discharge of green (or yellow) mucus from the nose; without coryza; also after frequent flowing of blood; polypus.

Polypi nasi, when they bleed easily.

Severe hemorrhage from nose, in diphtheria, following detachment of the membrane from the nose.

Sneezing causes pain in the throat.

Sensation of fulness in nose, especially high up in left nostril, with loose mucus.

Chronic inflammation of the nasal membrane; with suppressed or oversensitive smell.

Nose swollen, red, shining and inner nose very dry.

Necrosis: periosteum raised and forms a new stratum of bone.

Wing-like motion of the alae nasi.

Freckles on the nose.

Face

      Face: Pale, ashy; sickly yellow; livid; bloated, lips blue; hippocratic.

Circumscribed red spots on the cheeks.

Puffiness under the eyes.

Eyes sunken, with blue rings around.

Burning throbbing, in region of antium.

Twitching, tearing, darting and tension in cheek-bones and jaw, with threatening caries.

Pains from forehead into eyes (right), and from vertex and temples down upon the zygoma.

Tearing about lower margin of right orbit, extending under right ear, involving also bones of face, as if everything was torn out,.

Lower Face

      Lips dry, with sooty coating.

Necrosis of the lower jaw, rarely of the upper.

Tearing in jaw-bones, evening, worse lying down, better moving the jaw.

Parotitis, when suppuration sets in.

Tough, viscous expectoration, hangs on lips and tongue in typhoid conditions.

Nose, lips, mouth and throat dry; no relief from water.

Teeth

      Toothache; from washing clothes; from having the hands in cold or warm water.

Pricking and stinging in decayed teeth.

Gums stand off from teeth and bleed easily.

Tongue etc.

      Taste: bitter; slimy; sour, after drinking milk.

Tongue: dry, immovable, covered with black crusts, cracked, parched, or glossy; dry, coated white, with stinging in the tip; coated yellowish; coated only in the middle.

Mouth

      Aphthous patches on roof of mouth and tongue, Soreness of mouth, easily bleeding.

Saliva increased, tasting saltish or sweetish.

Throat

      Swelling of right tonsil; mucus in throat, removed with difficulty; is quite cold as it comes into mouth; mucus white, nearly transparent, in lumps.

Tonsils and uvula much swollen; uvula elongated; with dry and burning sensation. Muscular angina, with fatty degeneration.

Rawness and scraping in pharynx, worse toward evening; hawking in morning.

Dryness of throat day and night; it fairly glistens.

Sensation as of cotton in throat.

Burning in the oesophagus; spasmodic stricture.

Desires Aversions

      Wants to eat, but as soon as food is offered, does not want it.

Hunger: must eat during the chill, before he can get up; at night, feels faint.

Wants cold food and drink, ice cream, etc.

Thirst, longs for something refreshing.

Aversion to sweets, or to meat.

Want of appetite, from fulness in the throat.

Loss of appetite, alternating with bulimia; burning, cutting, pressing in stomach, nausea and vomiting.

Eating and Drinking

      Bad effects from excessive use of salt.

After eating: sleepy; belches much even after a little food.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations: frequent, empty; spasmodic; sour.

Regurgitation of food without nausea; also in mouthfuls.

Sourish, offensive fluid ejected in large quantity, looking like water, ink and coffee-grounds; after food, or even a swallow of water.

As soon as water becomes warm in stomach, it is thrown up.

Food scarcely swallowed, comes up again; spasms of oesophagus at cardiac end.

Constant nausea.

Vomiting; of bile; of blood.

Stomach

      Severe pressure in stomach, after eating with vomiting of food.

Oppression and burning in stomach; loss of appetite, inextinguishable thirst, worse after eating or drinking.

Cardialgia, with gnawing; worse from motion.

Cramps in stomach radiating to the liver.

Fulness and painfulness in stomach; sometimes a gurgling and stitching in pit of stomach.

Hemorrhage from stomach, better from drinking cold water.

Goneness in region of stomach.

Gastritis, with heart-burn, ending in an unconquerable scratching in the throat.

Hypochondria

      Jaundice: with pneumonia or brain disease; during pregnancy; from nervous excitement.

Acute yellow atrophy of the liver; malignant jaundice.

Diffuse hepatitis; liver hard, large with subsequent atrophy.

Abdomen

      Very sensitive abdomen, painful to touch; rolling and rumbling in abdomen; during and after drinking.

Painful feeling of weakness across whole abdomen, worse in hypogastric region after a short walk; must lie down.

Shooting in the abdomen, with empty feeling.

Sensation of coldness in the abdomen.

Abdomen flaccid, with chronic loose bowels.

Tympanitis, mostly about the coecum and transverse colon.

Stool etc.

      Stools: profuse, watery, pouring away as if from a hydrant, better after sleeping; copious, light colored; greenish, bloody; bloody, with small white particles, like opaque frog’s spawn; painless, blood-streaked, like flesh-colored water.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
