Mind

      Weak memory, aversion to mental exertion.

Taciturn.

Sadness, despondency.

Anxious about his diseases, with fear of death; fear of cholera, Vindicative; attacks of rage, with curses and maledictions.

Nervous, excitable, especially after abuse of mercury.

Sensorium

      Felt dizzy, dull, stupid.

Vertigo: morning, must lie down.

Congestion to head, with much heat in it.

Inner Head

      Head sensitive to rattling of wagons over paved streets, or to stepping hard.

Pressing from without; tension extending to eyes, with nausea; worse from noise; better on lying down or from carriage riding.

Stitches in head, compelling one to lie down; disturbing sleep.

Piercing in temples.

Violent throbbing, hammering on left side of head, coming gradually, towards morning, and going off about breakfast time.

Outer Head

      Pain in skull, with sensation as if constricted by a tape; worse evening and night better from cold air and while riding in a carriage.

Head very sensitive, even to pressure of the hat; worse in the evening and on part lain on.

Head feels hot.

Inflammatory swelling on scalp, suppurating or becoming carious worse from external pressure, or when lying thereon.

Red pimples, some brownish, on anterior border of hair and on temples.

Humid, stinging eruption on vertex and temples, down also to whiskers; bleeding easily when scratched, and feeling very sore when lain on.

Single, burning, moist sores on scalp. Syphilis.

Hair falls off, with humid eruptions, paining as from splinters; or, when touched; nervous headaches, debility and emaciation.

Eyes

      Black spots before the eyes.

Very sensitive to light.

Double vision; shortsightedness.

Pupils dilated and dim.

Eyes inflamed;after syphilis or abuse of mercury.

Iritis, which continually relapses; also old cases spoiled by mercury.

Pressure and stinging in the eyes.

Spots on the cornea.

Staphyloma, as a preventive.

Eyes dim, sunken.

Region of eyes painful, sore to the touch.

Herpetic pannus.

Eyelids swollen, hard, livid.

Paralysis of upper lids.

Fistula lachrymalis.

Flow of irritating tears, after injury of the eye.

Dermoid swellings of the eyes.

Ears

      One’s speech echoes in the ears.

Beating, humming in the ears. Cracking in the ears when masticating.

Hardness of hearing, f rom induration and swelling of tonsils; after abuse of mercury.

Eustachian tubes obstructed.

Terribly offensive, purulent otorrhoea.

Throbbing in the ear.

Auditory canal nearly closed Caries of mastoid process.

Nose

      Disagreeable smell on inhaling air.

Nosebleed, mornings; black, clotted; also when weeping; blood acrid.

Sneezing during sleep.

Nose obstructed with dry coryza, or with dropping of water: wings of nose swollen, burning.

Fetid, yellow, nasal discharge.

Ozaena, with ulcers.

Corroding nasal discharge.

Stitch in the nose as from a splinter.

Tip of nose red, scurfy.

Condylomata on nose.

Large, soft protuberances on alae, covered with crusts.

Syphilis.

Dirty, bloody mucus from posterior nares.

Green casts from the nose every morning.

Face

      Pale, eyes sunken.

Dark yellow about eyes, with red cheeks.

Swelling of the cheeks.

Bloated around the eyes on waking early.

Rush over the face and forehead, small pimples.

Suppurating pustules, with broad, red circumferences, forming crusts. Syphilis.

Comedones.

Freckles.

Lower Face

      Swollen lips.

Under-lip dry, cracked.

Margin of mouth covered with sores and blisters.

Corners of mouth ulcerated.

Painful swelling of submaxillary gland.

Teeth

      Pulsating, stinging in teeth, evening in bed and all night, after abuse of mercury.

Teeth feel elongated.

Teeth become yellow or loose.

Pain in hollow teeth.

Gums white, swollen, bleeding.

Tongue etc.

      Taste: bitter after eating: sour, with burning in the throat.

Tongue: sensitive, even and mild food causes smarting: white, dry, mornings; coated green, with ptyalism, dry, fissured.

Deep, irregular-shaped ulcers on the edge of the tongue. Syphilis.

Ulceration of tongue, with tough, ropy mucus.

Tongue white, with sore spots.

Mouth

      Cadaverous smell from the mouth.

Saliva fetid, acrid, makes lips sore.

Saliva bloody.

Mucous membrane of mouth swollen. ulcerated; with pricking pains, especially after abuse of mercury.

Tumor in the mouth, with a streak down the neck.

Throat

      Palate, tongue, inside of gums sore, with stinging pain and ulceration of corners of mouth.

Stitches in the throat, dry coryza, hoarseness.

Tonsils red swollen, uneven, with small ulcers thereon.

Dry throat, heat; gums sore.

Diphtheritic membrane on tonsils and fauces; extending to the nose; terrible fetor, intermittent pulse; swollen parotids.

Pricking as from a splinter in the throat; worse when swallowing.

Desires Aversions

      Longing for: fat; herring; chalk; line; earth.

Averse to meat and bread.

Loss of appetite.

Thirst violent in morning. Tuberculosis, suppuration of lungs.

Eating and Drinking

      During and after eating, sweat. Chokes while eating.

After eating; fulness in stomach, debility from least exertion, heat, palpitation; heavy weight in stomach.

Fat food causes nausea and acidity.

Milk disagrees.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Much nausea, cannot take food; vomits occasionally.

Nausea, with heat in the stomach, extending to the throat.

Nausea better from moving about or carriage riding.

Bitter and sour vomiting, with much eructation; vomiting yellow mucus.

Stomach

      Stitches in the pit of the stomach.

Pain in cardiac orifice on swallowing food.

Burning distress.

Hypochondria

      Chronic derangement of the liver; icterus.

Liver enormously enlarged; clay-colored stools.

Spleen large after yellow fever.

Abdomen

      Awakened at midnight, with crampy pains in small intestines; chilly; pain more if he moved.

Incarcerated flatulency in upper part of abdomen worse morning and evening.

Abdomen distended with flatulence, very tender.

Cutting-pinching, worse in the morning in bed.

Gurgling in left side of abdomen; cold feet; fetor oris.

Pain in abdomen when walking; must bend over; pain settles in ileo-caecal region; dull, sore, tender.

Inguinal hernia; also of children.

Burning over whole abdomen, 2 to 3 P.M.

Stinging soreness when touched.

Swelling and suppuration of inguinal glands.

Inflamed buboes.

Stool etc.

      Desire for stool, but little passes; feels as if it stayed in the rectum and could not be expelled.

Ineffectual urging to stool; colic.

Stools hard, preceded by great pressure, followed by mucus discharges.

Burning in rectum towards the perineum, wit ineffectual urging,

straining without stool; diphtheritic dysentery.

Sero-croupous discharge, with much straining.

Stools: bloody, with tenesmus; or mucus; putrid, mucous; undigested; loose, much flatulence, rumbling; of yellow-white fluid;’ loose mornings; green, slimy acrid diarrhoea.

Hemorrhage bright red, not clotted; faint from least motion; ulcers in ileo-caecal region.

Piles: cold pendulous, ceased bleeding, but pain when touched worse in warm weather, slimy, fissured; bleed after every stool.

Fissure in rectum; tearing, spasmodic symptoms during stool; lancinating, after, even after soft stools.

Moisture about the anus.

Urine

      Cold when it passes; scanty, dark brown, smelling strong like horse’s urine, turbid, looks like remains in a cider barrel.

While urinating, smarting-burning in urethra.

Haematuria; urging after, and shuddering along the spine, during urination; blood flows actively.

Incontinence of urine.

Spasms of the urethra; rectal fissure.

Ulcers in urethra; bloody, mucous or purulent discharge.

Male Sexual Organs

      Sexual desire too strong.

No desire; want of erections.

Painful spasmodic erections at night.

Hard, brown nodules on scrotum, suppurating.

Brown-red spots, peeling off on discharging.

Gonorrhoea, with chancres, or warts.

Small blisters on orifice of urethra and inner surface of prepuce, forming chancre-like ulcers. Gonorrhoea.

Ulcers deep, fistulous, irregular, ragged; edges often raised, lead-colored; bleed easily when touched Syphilis.

Secondary syphilis:, Phimosis., chancres after mercury, especially with exuberant granulations.

Condylomata.

Falling off the hair from genitals.

Female Sexual Organs

      After coitus, mucous lining of genitals itches voluptuously; excrescences on uterus.

Pressing down in hypogastrium and small of back, as though everything would protrude; pain down thighs; abdomen feels swollen.

Uterine hemorrhage from overexertion of body.

Menses: early, irregular, scanty, and like muddy water; early and profuse; aching from the thighs; urine offensive.

Urine menses eructations, cramp-like pain in the abdomen, as if it During burst.

Profuse, brown, offensive discharge between the irregular menstruations. Cancer uteri.

Leucorrhoea: of ropy mucus; of green mucus; of flesh colored; acrid, brown, offensive,.

Stitches up the vagina, or from without inward, when walking in the open air.

Itching, swelling and burning of vulva and vagina.

Excrescences on cervix uteri.

Pregnancy

      Metrorrhagia after abortion or confinement.

Hard nodes on mammae.

Atrophy of the mammae.

Larynx

      Hoarseness: with coryza, from long talking; scratching and stinging in throat.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
