Mind

      Unconsciousness. Moaning.

Sitting quiet, sad and silent, with anxious care about the future.

Irritable, disposed to anger and chagrin. Peevishness.

Restlessness, frequently changing position.

Sensorium

      Vertigo: worse moving the eyes; slightly worse walking, though this relieves headache with tottering gait.

Dizzy, nauseated, A.M., worse lying on right side or back. Heaviness in occiput, with obscure sight worse with effort to see; also, with swollen glands.

Inner Head

      Headache in spells regularly every day, from A.M. until P.M.; begins with soreness over left eye; then in eyeball and left half of nose, forehead and temple, to back of head.

Headache, as if the brain were torn or beaten to pieces; worse moving the eyes or sitting up in bed; better from moderate exercise.

Headache, as if brain were clasped by a hand and was being twisted and torn.

Steady, sharp pain in back part of head, with a heavy feeling, as if occiput were filled with lead.

Headache from walking in open air, especially in cold wind.

Distant talking causes headache.

Outer Head

      Stiff and sore: in occiput, worse when touched; on left side

of head and down spine, worse on lying.

Tearing in the right parietal bone.

Heat on top of head.

Feels as if hair were standing on end.

Eyes

      Perpendicular half sight.

Obscured sight; pain in occiput. Pupils contracted.

Itching, smarting in canthi.

Lids red, swollen.

Stitches out of the eyes.

Worse from light, better in the dark.

Ears

      Hardness of hearing; loud cracking sounds during the night; no cerumen; dryness, peeling off in scales; worse right ear.

Distant sounds cause headache; sound of voice unbearable.

Want of feeling in the internal meatus.

Tingling, humming, whizzing in the ear.

Beating or knocking in the ear.

Otalgia, with pressing pain.

Tingling, creeping, cold pain, running from ears up to top of head, sharp boring in temporal regions.

Nose

      Long-lasting nosebleed.

Coryza thin, acrid, making parts sore.

Face

      Heat in face, glowing red cheeks when walking in open air; no thirst.

Lower Face

      Lower jaw hangs down.

Pimples around the mouth form a scurf, Burning lips.

Bloated lower lip; feels heavy, burns.

Teeth

      Toothache (pulsating) from cold drinks; toothache, with earache.

Tingling toothache; better from warm applications.

Gums swollen, bleeding, ulcerating.

Teeth rise from their sockets.

      Everything tastes sweet.

Taste acrid and putrid, like rotten eggs, with ptyalism.

Tongue heavy as lead, hinders talking; feels lame, sore.

Tongue sore, bluish; contains deep ulcers: with black bases and vesicles.

Mouth

      Stomacace of nursing children; patch on right side of tongue, large and irregular, but very deep; fetid breath.

Stomatitis, with extreme dryness, swollen gums, great adynamia.

Foul breath. Scarlatina.

Mouth as if glued up with insipid mucus; much saliva. Salivary glands tender, swollen.

Throat

      Rawness and smarting of fauces; burning.

Dry throat, with burning in the chest.

Dark, bluish-red fauces in scarlet fever: 4.

Desires Aversions

      Excessive hunger and thirst.

Aversion to meat.

Morbid longing for alcoholic drinks.

Thirst:.

Eating and Drinking

      Hiccough (before and after dinner).

Better after drinking.

After eating: worse; diarrhoea.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations: bitter, putrid.

Vomiting, with belching, coughing; involuntary swallowing; gulping up of contents of stomach into oesophagus, sometimes going down again.

Stomach

      Empty sensation in stomach extending through whole abdomen, but no hunger; weak feeling in the stomach from 10 A.M. until evening.

Hypochondria

      Pressing and tension in the hypochondria.

Abdomen

      Fulness and distention of abdomen, from small quantities of food.

Rumbling and feeling of emptiness.

Cramps in abdomen.

Hernia,.

Stool etc.

      Stool: difficult, as from inactivity of the bowels; too thin, but round; thin, watery, involuntary, while urinating; greenish in typhoid.

Dysentery, blood and slime separated.

Diarrhoea, with much wind; worse morning and evening; with intolerable anal itching, not relieved by scratching; smarting and burning in anus.

As soon as he begins to move, strong urging compelling haste; stools profuse, dark, brown, greenish, gelatinous; followed by dragging, heavy sensation in abdomen.

Piles: suddenly, in children; protruding, reddish-blue, burning; too sore to bear the least touch.

Prolapsus ani while urinating.

Urine

      Frequent and scanty urination.

Frequent and profuse urination.

Slow emission of urine; bladder weak; must wait a long time before urine will pass; has to press so that anus protrudes.

Urine involuntary.

Urine red, violet; milk-like.

Burning, cutting, while urinating: straining in urethra afterwards.

Male Sexual Organs

      Organs weak, penis relaxed.

Impotency; desire weak.

Watery, blood gleet.

Scrotum bluish red.

Itching of scrotum, not relieved by scratching.

Margin of prepuce sore.

Female Sexual Organs

      Pressing on genitals, as if menses would appear.

Menses too early and profuse; dejection of spirits; silent, as if she would die; colic; sore piles.

Ulcers on genitals, with putrid discharge, much sensitiveness and general weakness.

Cannot bear least touch, not even of sheet on the genitals.

Leucorrhoea with backache, sore anus from piles,.

Pregnancy

      Puerperal fever.

Larynx

      Hoarseness: with sore feeling in the chest, with whooping- cough.

Breathing

      Breathing deep, groaning; moaning; deep sighing.

Breathing seems to come from the stomach.

Short breath, with rattling after drinking, talking or coughing.

Dyspnoea and constriction of chest. Whooping-cough.

Oppression across the chest (evening).

Cough

      Rough, with rattling in chest, followed by cramp in the stomach; short breath; with heat in the face.

Whooping cough; after the attacks, audible rumbling, gurgling down the chest.

Whooping-cough excited by tickling in chest; in afternoon and evening without, in morning, with a slight dislodgment of a yellow or watery mucus of a fatty taste, and which must be swallowed; sometimes with expectoration of dark blood.

Lungs

      Stitches in chest, and at heart, when taking a long breath and on violent motion; burning stitches.

Tension and pain on the sternum.

Bursting pain in chest; pain as if beaten.

Heart Pulse

      Palpitation of the heart felt in the face.

Stitches in heart.

Pulse slow and weak, sometimes intermitting; slow during day, more frequent at night.

Neck Back

      Pressing pain in back, as from a sprain, or as if he had stopped long.

Pressing, drawing, tired pain in lumbar region.

Os coccyx pains.

Upper Limbs

      Heaviness of the arms, especially forearms.

Scabby eruption on back, hands and fingers.

Numbness, coldness and deadness of fingers at night.

Lower Limbs

      Wavering gait from weakness of thighs.

Pain in right thigh, with itching in anus.

OEdematous swelling of lower limbs, with shooting pain.

Nerves

Chill Fever Sweat

      More chill than heat.

Chill awakens him in the morning.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
