Mind

      Thinks herself under superhuman control.

Complete insensibility.

Memory weak, makes mistakes in orthography Quick comprehension; mental excitability, with almost prophetic perceptions; ecstasy.

Delirium, fears she will be damned.

Delirium at night, muttering, drowsy, red face; or slow, difficult speech and dropped jaw.

Mania, with great loquacity, frequently jumping from one subject to another.

Mania after overstudying.

Delirium tremens, worse after sleep; cannot bear pressure of neckcloth; loquacious.

Delirium from overwatching, overfatigue; loss of fluids; excessive study.

Thinks she is dead, and that preparations are being made for her funeral; thinks herself pursued by enemies; fears the medicine is poison.

Loquacity, with mocking jealousy; frightful images.

Talks, sings, whistles, makes odd motions.

Proud; jealous, suspicious.

Peevish, disposed to be morose or to quarrel.

Suicidal mood, tired to life.

Great sadness and anxiety, worse in morning on awakening.

Dread of death, fears to go to bed. Fears being poisoned.

Sensorium

      Vertigo : from looking at one and the same object; from walking in the open air (at climaxis); from suppressed erysipelas; with pale face; migraine.

Head heavy like lead, worse about occiput, with vertigo.

Rush of blood to the head, after spirituous liquors; from suppressed or irregular menses.

Blowing expiration, cannot bear neck touched; leftsided apoplexy, especially if after mental emotions, or abuse of alcohol.

Severe pains all over the head, so giddy he could not stand; could not see the letters, fell against the wall.

Inner Head

      Frontal headache, faint on rising.

Headache over eyes and in occiput, morning, on rising.

Pressing bursting pains in temples, better when lying down.

Temporal nerves pain, vertigo, pale face; throbbing temples.

One-sided headache; pains intense, extend to neck and shoulders, with stiff neck; paralytic tongue.

Tearing on top of head from within outward. See face.

Weight and pressure on the vertex.

Burning of the vertex, at the menopause.

Beating headache with heat, worse on the vertex and right side, or over the eyes, preceding a cold in the head, with stiff neck.

Feeling in back of head as if pressed asunder.

Headache in the sun, glimmering sight.

Throbbing in the head from least movement; congestion.

Outer Head

      Purplish swelling; delirious talk when closing the eyes. Erysipelas.

Tumors which perforate the skull.

Hair falls off, worse during pregnancy; averse to sun’s rays.

Eyes

      Oversensitive to light.

Amblyopia, with lung or heart affections.

Feels, when throat is pressed, as if eyes were forced out.

Whites of the eyes yellow. Redness of the eyes.

Retinitis apoplectica.

Ulcers on the cornea.

Severe pain in and above the eyes.

Ears

      Sensitiveness to sounds; rushing and thundering in the ears.

Hardness of hearing, with want of wax; dryness in the ears; numbness about the ear and cheek (left).

Ear-wax too hard, pale, and insufficient.

Nose

      Nosebleed, dark; with amenorrhoea; typhus, etc.; blowing of blood, mostly in the morning.

Coryza preceded by headache; discharge watery with red nostrils, herpes on the lips.

Relieves paroxysms of sneezing in hay asthma.

Nasal mucous membrane swollen; sneezing.

Pus and blood from the nose.

Vesicular eruption about the nose.

Nose red externally; nose filled with scabs; discharge of pus and blood; mercurio-syphilis; also in drunkards.

Face

      Flushes of heat in drunkards.

Expression of pain with sopor.

Features distorted.

Livid, grey complexion, with abdominal complaints or ague.

Face pale, with fainting : dizzy with headache.

Yellow complexion, with vermillion redness of the cheeks, or with small red blood-vessels shining through the skin. Syphilis.

Red face, as in apoplexy; bloated red face, with headache, pains in limbs, stomach, etc.

Erysipelas of the face, with burning and itching, worse after siesta; with hammering headache.

Neuralgia, left side, orbital; rising of heat to the face before, and weak feeling in the abdomen after, the attack.

Lower Face

      Lower jaw hangs down. Coma.

Lips dry, cracked, bleeding.

Lower lip swollen.

Teeth

      Decayed teeth pain when biting; after sleep; after abuse of mercury. Decayed teeth crumble.

Cheek swollen, skin tense, hot and crisp, as if it would crack; periodontitis.

Gums bluish, swollen, bleeding, worse from warm drinks.

Tongue etc.

      Sour taste, everything turns sour.

Difficult speech, tongue heavy, cannot open mouth wide.

Puts the trembling tongue out with great difficulty. Diphtheria, etc.

Tongue : trembles when protruded, or catches behind the teeth; swollen, coated white; papillae enlarged; dry, red cracked at the tip; red up and down centre; mapped dry, black and stiff.

Blisters, mostly about the tip.

Talking :.

Mouth

      Bad odor from the mouth.

Saliva abundant, tenacious.

Sore mouth in the last stages of phthisis Sensation on roof of mouth as if the mucous membrane were peeling off.

Throat

      Uvula elongated; fauces purplish and swollen, or ulcerated.

Feeling of a lump in the throat; suffocative sensation; on swallowing, the lump descends, but returns at once : When swallowing fluids, they escape through the nose; worse when swallowing saliva, less from liquid, and even relieved by solids.

Much phlegm in the fauces, with painful hawking.

Pain and soreness begin on left side of throat. Tonsillitis. Diphtheria. Constriction of the throat; feels as if tied; worse from the least external pressure; suffocating spells, worse during or awaking from sleep.

Tonsils swollen, worse the left, with a tendency to the right; inability to swallow, threatening suffocation; or, on swallowing, pain shoots into the (left) ear; cannot bear anything to touch the neck.

Diphtheritic patches in the throat, spreading from left to right; fetid breath; worse after sleep; great debility, feeble pulse; clammy sweat; headache and faintness.

Aggravation by hot drinks; liquids pain more than solids while swallowing. Tonsillitis. Diphtheria.

Excessive tenderness of throat to external pressure, Tonsillitis Diphtheria. Ulcers in the throat; worse in wet weather; after mercury; from syphilis; ulcers extend up into posterior nares;throat so dry, he awakens choking; soft palate full of cicatrices, with greenish-yellow ulcers between; pains shooting; fetid breath.

Desires Aversions

      Appetite gone.

Thirst insatiable, with disgust for drink.

Desire for oysters; for wine and liquors; for coffee, which agrees.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating : gnawing in stomach better, but returns in a few hours. Cancer of stomach.

After eating : vertigo, languor; gagging and suffocation; dyspnoea; stomach puffed; eructations, flushes of heat.

After acids, symptoms worse.

Worse from alcoholic drinks (except the snake-bite).

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations, which relieve.

Everything sour; heart-burn.

Nausea after drinking.

Nausea in attacks, weakness, dyspnoea, palpitation. cold sweat.

Vomiting : of food; of bile; of mucus; with copious saliva.

Stomach

      Pit of stomach painful to touch.

Dyspepsia worse as soon as he eats: costive; weak digestion, especially after mercury.

Gnawing pressure; relieved after eating, but returning as soon as the stomach is empty.

Hypochondria

      Acute pain in the liver, extending towards the stomach.

Liver complaints at the climaxis; after ague; pain as if something had lodged in the right side, with stinging.

Cannot bear any pressure about the hypochondria.

Contractive pain in the region of the liver.

Ulcerative pain about liver; inflammation and abscess.

Abdomen

      Painful distention, flatulence; can bear no pressure.

Burning like fire in hypogastric and lumbar region.

Cutting in right side of abdomen, causing fainting attacks.

Swelling in caecal region; must lie on the back with limbs drawn up. Typhlitis.

Abdomen hot, sensitive, painfully stiff from loins down the thighs; pus formed. Peritonitis.

Stool etc.

      Thin, offensive stools.

Stools : watery, light yellow, fecal; dark, chocolate-colored, cadaverous-smelling; of decomposed blood, looking like charred straw; mixed blood and slime; worse at night, after acids; during warm weather.

Painful straining, with discharge of croupous exudate.

Diarrhoea and constipation in alternation.

Costive, ineffectual urging; anus feels closed. Stools offensive, even if formed.

Beating in the anus as from hammers.

Tormenting urging, but not to stool.

Wants to pass stool, but the pain is so increased thereby, he must desist.

Rectum prolapsed and tumefied.

Piles protruding or strangulated. or, with stitches upward at each cough or sneeze; worse at climaxis, or with drunkards.

Itching at the anus; worse after sleep.

Urine

      Stitches from kidneys, through the ureters.

Urine : almost black; frequent, foamy, dark.

Ineffectual urging to urinate; burning when it does pass.

Feeling as of a ball rolling in the bladder or abdomen, when turning over.

Discharge of offensive mucus during micturition; catarrh of bladder.

Male Sexual Organs

      Sexual excitement.

Onanism, with epilepsy.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
