Mind

      Forgetfulness; dim recollection of recent events.

Weakness in the head, can scarcely think.

Slow in thought.

Dread of work. Hates work.

Mood : changeable; sad, with thoughts of death; sad and weeping; forlorn; depressed; dejected.

Full of fear in the morning.

Solicitude concerning spiritual welfare.

Great anxiety.

Much inclined to grief.

Hesitates at trifles. Timidity.

Fretful. Ill humored. Easily vexed : Irritable.

Child impudent, teasing, laughs at reprimands.

Fidgety while sitting at work.

Scientific labor fatigues him.

Thoughts of many things at night prevent sleep.

Ailments from grief.

Sensorium

      Attacks of dizziness, with inclination to fall forward; feels as if drunken when rising from bed in the morning.

Dulness of the head.

Rush of blood, with feeling of heat in the head.

Vertigo; on looking upwards, in the morning on awaking; in the evening, was obliged to lie down; during and after stooping, with inclination to fall forward; venous stagnation.

Frequently feels faint, with partial loss of senses.

Desolate, empty feeling in the head.

Beclouded feeling in the forehead.

Inner Head

      Forehead : pressure deep in; drawing; tearing; bursting.

Stinging or stitching pains in the temples.

Throbbing in the sides of the head.

Pressive pains : in the vertex; in the occiput.

Tearing pain in one side of head, in teeth and glands of throat.

Pain as if constricted with a cord, particularly in occiput.

Pain from left temple down the side of the face to the shoulder; face distorted; left corner of mouth drawn inward and downward.

Lancinating pain in right temple.

Violent headache, with nausea, during the menses.

Outer Head

      Scalp feels bruised.

Sensation as if the skin of forehead were drawn into folds.

Coldness of the scalp.

Burning on the vertex in a small spot.

Sweat on the head when walking in the open air.

Itching on the scalp.

Eczema capitis, of entire scalp, forming massive, dirty crusts, which mat the hair together; scabs sore to touch.

Bald places on the head perfectly smooth and shining.

Circumscribed bald spot on front of head covered with herpes.

Porrigo decalvans.

Hair falls out, even on the sides of the head.

Eyes,

      Intolerance of light; with redness of the white of the eye; hyperaesthesia of eyes, with the vertigo.

Shunning daylight usually more than gaslight; photophobia.

Light dazzles the eyes: sunlight causing lancinating pains in the eyes.

Shortsightedness.

Letters : appear double when writing; run together when reading; sees fiery zigzags around the outside of the field of vision, in the evening, with the eye open.

Flickering before the eyes.

Sees as through a mist; everything turns black before the eyes when stooping.

Tiredness of the eyes.

Pressing pain in the eyes, morning and evening.

Drawing, extending from the eye up into the head.

Stitches from the temple through the eye to inner canthus, on looking at anything white or red, or at the sun.

Smarting in the eyes, with heat in them.

Burning and aching in eyes; burning pain around the eyes.

Ulcer on the cornea, with a few small vessels running into it; with moist fissured eczematous eruptions.

Pustules on the cornea and conjunctiva, with much lachrymation.

Pustule on the cornea, or reddish appearance, with white halo around it; the corners of lids raw and bleed easily.

Arthritic ophthalmia, with contraction and irregularity of the pupils.

Lachrymation in the open air; also chronic.

Thin, acrid discharge from the eyes; pus-like discharge from the eyes.

Internal canthus :itching; burning; stitches; sore.

External canthus; sore and fissured; fissured and bleed easily.

Ears

      Music makes her weep.

Hissing; ringing; rushing; roaring; cracking; or clucking sounds in the ears.

Violent nocturnal roaring, ears feel stuffed at times (during the full moon).

Sounds as of rolling thunder before the ears.

Cracking in the ear : when eating in the evening; on moving the jaw, but only in the morning while lying in bed; when sneezing.

Snapping as if a skin were before the ears.

At every step feels as if a valve in right ear opened and closed.

Loss of hearing, with dryness of the ears.

Acute pressure in the inner ear, like otalgia.

Stitches in the ears.

Distended capillaries on the membrane of right drum.

Both tympana covered with a white coating, but not perforated.

Lining membrane of meatus red and excoriated.

Thin, watery, offensive discharge from both ears.

Gluey, sticky discharge at the external meatus.

Pus runs out of the ear.

Bad odor from the ear.

Copper-colored nodes on the ears.

Swelling of both ears, with moist eruption behind the ears.

Eczema impetigenoides: began as a moisture behind the left ear, thence spread over the cheeks and neck.

Behind the ears : fissures; scabs.

Nose

      Sense of smell too acute; cannot bear the smell of flowers.

Smell from the nose as from burned hair.

Loss of smell: with dryness of nose; with coryza.

Nosebleed : in the evening, the afternoon preceding rush of blood to the head and heat of the face; at night; in the morning; with running coryza.

Bloody mucous discharge from the nose.

Frequent discharge of thick yellowish, fetid mucus from the nose.

Purulent, fetid secretion.

Dryness of the nose.

Sneezing : on opening the eyes; either with dryness of nose or running coryza.

Stoppage of the nose, with secretion of tough badly-smelling mucus. Coryza on getting cold.

Excoriation of the nose.

Mucus often forms hard masses or crusts, in coryza.

Dry scabs in the nose, with sore, cracked and ulcerated nostrils.

Swelling of the nose.

Red nose, with black pores.

Face

      Face : pale and haggard; pale and bloated; chlorotic; flushed.

Erysipelas : of both sides of the face, with burning stinging pain of the cheeks, preceded by alternating chills and heat; of left cheek, after mal-application of Iodum for sore of inner nose; of face, from the smell of wood; commencing on right side and going to left.

Hemiplegia facialis (several cases) Humid pimples on the face.

Moist eczema on the face.

Rhagades on the cheek, running like radii toward the corners of the mouth; an infiltrated spot on the cheek, is covered with dry scales.

Scabs on the face, skin dry, constipated large stools.

Freckles.

Hair of the whiskers or beard falls out.

Lower Face

      Painful nodules on the lower jaw.

Upper lip : twitching : stinging; swollen; painful pimples.

Corners of mouth ulcerated.

Heaviness in the lower lip.

Formication in the lips during the menses.

Lips chapped.

Swelling of the submaxillary glands painful to touch.

Teeth

      Pressing pain in the teeth, worse from touch or biting.

Drawing pain in the molars while walking in the wind.

Tearing pain, worse by warmth; renewed by going to bed.

Stinging toothache after cold drink.

Toothache, worse at night.

Painful soreness on the inner side of the gums.

Swelling of the gums and dryness of the mouth.

Tongue etc.

      Taste : sour; salty; bitter; like rotten eggs.

Tongue sensitive.

Tongue coated white.

Whitish, painful ulcer on lower surface of the tongue.

Mouth

      Rotten odor from the mouth and gums.

Acid, foul odor.

Breath smells like urine.

Saliva increased, much spitting.

Dryness of the mouth in the morning.

Throat

      Palate : feels sore; and fauces somewhat reddened.

Violent catarrh of the fauces, with sensation as if tough food had to pass over a lump in the throat.

Constant cramp in the throat causing him to retch, as if the food would not go down.

Nightly pains in the throat, like a plug.

Ulcerative pain in the throat.

Roughness and rawness in the throat.

Hawking of phlegm.

Throat seems full of gurgling mucus.

Desires Aversions

      Appetite: good; excessive hunger, or no appetite with much thirst, or with fulness of the abdomen.

Desire for drink, without thirst.

Aversion to : meat; fish; cooked food; salt.

Eating and Drinking

      Worse when hungry.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Hiccough after either one or all meals.

Eructations : sour; tasting of the food eaten; relieve the pressure in the stomach.

Rancid heart-burn after dinner.

Qualmishness : mornings and several hours after dinner.

Nausea : and vertigo; and sweat, with anxiety; like faintness, prevents sleep; with spasm in the throat; with eructation; with headache; with inclination to vomit; and sour vomiting; in the morning; after eating.

Vomiting; sour; of food.

Vomiting, purging, and icy-cold sweat, with headache.

Stomach

      Sickening, painful feeling at the pit of stomach.

Pressure in the pit of stomach, night and morning.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
