      Nitro-glycerin. HERING. C3H5 (NO2)O3.

Mind

      Loses senses, sinks down unconscious, congestion alternately to head and heart.

Well-known streets seem strange; way home too long; forgets on which side she lives.

Bright, loquacious, great flow of ideas.

Weeps and shudders between attacks of pain.

Agitation, attempt to run away.

Frantic; attempted to jump from window (with headache).

Fear, throat feels swollen; chest as if screwed together; apprehensive of approaching death; fears she has been poisoned.

Sensorium

      Head felt larger.

Balancing sensation, constant effort to keep head erect.

Vertigo : confusion, faintness, black spots before eyes; worse from stooping or moving head; worse in the open air.

Syncope, nausea, face pale or livid; beating in the head.

Sunstroke : vertigo, violent pain; pale face, feeble pulse; labored breathing, nausea; comatose; or throbbing in head; face yellowish-red, or livid; eyes fixed; pulse full, slow : tongue coated, no appetite.

Inner Head

      Tensive pain over eyes and nose, also behind ears, followed by choking sensation about throat.

Headache from below upwards.

Sensation of soreness through whole head, is afraid to shake head; it seems to him as if head would drop to pieces.

Shocks in the brain synchronous with the pulse.

Throbbing : in temples; in vertex; occiput; in whole head.

Dull headache in the forehead, with warm sweat.

Severe pain in forehead, throbbing in the temples, worse from walking.

Dull, pressive pain, worse in occiput and neck; worse from moving head or twisting the neck.

Brain feels too large; bursting feeling; fulness, throbbing of arteries; all the blood seems to be pumped upwards; holds the head with the hands.

Brain as if moving in waves.

Congestion to head, sudden, violent; throbbing felt with every pulse at every step or jarring; blood mounts from neck, throat or chest; from occiput toward eyes.

Hemicrania, sees half light, half dark.

Headache with increased secretion of urine.

Headache with red face, accelerated pulse, sweat on face, unconsciousness; better in open air, after sleep, after vomiting.

Cri encephalique.

Headache worse : from shaking or jarring the head; stooping; bending it backwards; after lying down; when ascending steps; in damp weather; in the sun; while working under gaslight; after overheating, with copious sweat; could not bear touch of hat; cold water (even causing spasms); reading, writing; wine.

Better; from uncovering; in open air.

Outer Head

      Consequences of cutting the hair.

Rigidity of occipito frontalis.

Head feels too large.

Eyes

      Flashes of lightning, sparks before eyes.

Objects dance with every pulsation.

Dim sight with vertigo, with fainting, black spots before the eyes.

Pupils contracted. Sunstroke.

Pupils dilated; eyes upturned : sunstroke; eyes rolled outwards and up; convulsions.

Eyes injected red, protruding wild, staring; eyes dull, staring, sunken.

Photophobia.

Sees everything half light, half dark.

Letters appear smaller.

Drawing, pressing, aching, bursting pain: soreness, quivering, twitching.

Ears

      Deafness, ears as if stopped up, deafness followed by blurred vision.

Ringing in the ears, audible pulse.

Throbbing piercing from within outward, in right ear.

Throbbing : above ears; from occiput to ears.

Sensation of fulness in and around ears.

Ears red.

Nose

      Pains in root of nose, headache extends to nose.

Sudden sneezing; fluent coryza.

Face

      Flushed, hot, especially about the eyes and forehead, with headache; livid, purple; alternately flushed and pale; pale during the heat, in sunstroke, congestions to brain, etc.

Sweat on the face.

Faceache, muscles twitch, even unconsciousness, breathing stertorous; faceache worse in heat of bed.

Masseter muscles affected.

Sudden neuralgic pains from decayed tooth, concentrating in temple; head heavy, but cannot lay it on the pillow,.

Lower Face

      Jaws clenched in sunstroke.

Lower lips feel swollen.

Chin feels elongated.

Teeth

      Pulsating, throbbing pains, teeth feel elongated; decayed.

Stabbing in gums worse from hot applications, better from cold.

Tongue etc.

      Taste : bitter, with nausea; aromatic, sweet, warm, leaves fatty taste Tongue : milk-white without coating, violent headache; or, light coating; cannot eat; weak; typhoid; feels swollen, raw; numb, as if burnt; prickling, stinging.

Difficulty in conversing, from diminished power of tongue and confusion of ideas.

Mouth

      Saliva increased, slimy.

Froth about mouth. Convulsions.

Sensation of soreness and swelling on roof of mouth, with pulsation.

Throat

      Soft palate : dry, feels as if drawn up.

Hard palate, sensitive as if swollen; throbbing; swollen sensation in the fauces.

Throat feels as if swelling; full sensation in both sides of neck.

Constriction at top of larynx; in throat, as if throttled.

Tickling heat, soreness in throat.

Desires Aversions

      Increased desire to smoke.

Wants cold water; also from dry, parched feeling.

Loss of appetite; sunstroke, etc.

Eating and Drinking

      Wine aggravates all symptoms.

Alcoholic stimulants cause delirium, congestions, stupor.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Nausea: with the congestions; retching, during sunstroke, and faint feeling; causing sweat, which relieves..

Vomiting : spasmodic, in hydrocephalus; in sunstroke.

Stomach

      Pain in stomach; distress in epigastrium; sunstroke.

Stomach and head feel as if he had been out in hot sun.

Gnawing in epigastrium.

Faint feeling at pit of stomach; also, with throbbing there.

Pain in pit of stomach, as if sore, when touched; worse when stooping.

Abdomen

      Rumbling in bowels, belching, passing offensive flatus.

Cutting, mostly below the navel (wakens one in morning.).

Stool etc.

      Stools : loose, scanty, with much rumbling; copious, loose dark, lumpy, with colic heat in the anus, nausea and sudden urging.

Diarrhoea, with sudden urging, Diarrhoea, with sudden cessation of the menses.

Costive.

Urine

      Abundant, highly albuminous; must rise often at night to pass it; high colored, burning while passing; with red sediment and reddish-yellow slime.

Female Sexual Organs

      Instead of menses : congestion to head, face pale; worse in warm room; better when walking in the cold air; diarrhoea; fainting.

Before, during and after menses, or when it does not appear, fulness in the head, throbbing.

At climaxis :flushes of heat, pressure in head, nausea, loss of senses, vertigo, swelling of feet.

Pregnancy

      During pregnancy congestions.

Eclampsia: unconscious; face bright red; puffed; pulse full, hard; urine copious and albuminous.

Breathing

      Breathing : heavy, labored, stertorous; oppressed; from feeling of weight; accelerated; must often breathe deeply; sighing.

Lungs

      Chest feels as if laced.

Sinking feeling in head and chest, as from working in hot room.

Congestion to chest alternately with head.

Numb sensation moving upwards in chest and down left arm.

Heart Pulse

      Laborious action of the heart; oppression; frequent pulse.

Pressure in heart as if it was being contracted.

Sharp pains in the heart.

Fulness in the heart.

Anxiety in praecordia; weakness.

Heart’s action easily excited; violent palpitation, throbbing carotids, pulsating headache; worse stooping.

Purring noise in region of heart when lying; pulse intermittent; must have head high;worse when lying on left side; better on right.

Pulse : accelerated, rises and falls alternately; increased during headache, motion, walking; quick, small, irregular, with violent action of heart; low, feeble, in sunstroke.

Outer Chest

      Sweat on the chest.

Neck Back

      Nape of neck stiff, with headache.

Sharp cutting across scapulae.

Hot sensation down the back; burning between scapulae.

Pain down entire spine; after constriction in chest; shiverings downward.

Old contusions.

Upper Limbs

      Arms : nervous, uneasy; heavy, as if circulation was checked; numbness, heaviness following the throbbing; numbness, weariness in left arm.

Weakness of wrist after headache.

Rheumatic pains in fingers of left hand.

Feels pulse in fingers.

Lower Limbs

      Knees give way, thigh weak during headache; left thigh numb.

Limbs relaxed, motionless in sunstroke.

Rheumatism of left knee, deep twinging, pricking; worse from motion; better from straightening limb.

Could not rise on account of weakness in limbs; headache, worse when covered.

Cold feet, with nausea, palpitation.

Position etc.

      Worse from moving, shaking, jarring parts.

Walking eases pain in limbs.

Better from general motion.

Nerves

      Prostration.

Restlessness in limbs, must rise and walk.

Convulsions; epileptiform, cerebral congestion, scanty or suppressed menses; hands clinched, thumbs in palms, face red, eyes rolled upwards, then sopor; left sided, with fingers spread; face alternately red and pale.

Sleep

      Drowsy, yawning; face hot and pale.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
