      Poison Hemlock. HAHNEMANN. Umbelliferae.

Mind

      Extreme want of memory.

Dullness, difficulty in understanding what he is reading.

Disinclination for business.

Aversion to man, and yet averse to being alone.

Complete indifference.

Hypochondriacal depression and indifference when walking in the open air.

Easily disturbed by trifles, moved to tears.

Morose mood; everything about him impresses him unpleasantly.

Very ill-humored from 5 to P.M.

Sensorium

      Vertigo: like turning in a circle, on rising from a seat; worse when lying down, as though the bed were turning in a circle; when turning in bed or when looking around; from motion downwards; when walking; venous abdominal hyperaemia.

Inner Head

      Headache as if the head were too full and would burst; morning when awakening.

Stitching pain from within outward, in the forehead, morning, or at noon.

Tearing in the head, must lie down.

Tearing headache, with nausea.

Sensation in right halt of brain as of a large foreign body.

Pain in the occiput, with every pulse, as if pierced with a knife.

Eyes

      Weakness of sight; also from partial paralysis of optic nerve.

Shortsighted.

Objects look red; rainbow-colored; striped, confused spots.

Sluggish adaptation of the eye to varied range of vision.

Weakness and dazzling of the eyes, together with giddiness and debility, especially of arms and legs; on walking, staggering as if drunken.

Aversion to light, without inflammation of the eyes.

Cataract from contusion.

Pupils dilated.

Ulcers on the cornea (right to left); great photophobia, but little injection.

Burning of the eyes.

Could scarcely raise the eyelids, they seemed pressed down by a heavy weight; disposed to fall asleep.

Burning on inner surface of the lids.

Smarting pain in the inner canthus, with lachrymation.

Ears

      Ringing; humming and roaring in the ears.

Painful sensitiveness of hearing; noise startles.

Ears feel as if stopped up, when blowing the nose.

Accumulation of ear wax, looking like decayed paper, mixed with pus or mucus; or blood- red hard wax, and oversensitive to noise.

Stitches in the ears.

Otorrhoea in the scrofulous; inflammation of mastoid cells.

Tumors and boils behind the ears.

Parotid glands swollen and hard.

Nose

      Acute sense of smell.

Purulent discharge from the nose; also, hardened crusts.

Epistaxis.

Frequent sneezing.

Face

      Earthy; yellow; pale; purple, bloated.

Stinging, tearing faceache, at night.; Moist and spreading herpes, on the face.

Lower Face

      Cancer of the lips, from pressure of the pipe.

Lips and teeth covered with black crusts.

Lips burning; dry; shooting in the lips.

Blisters, or eruption on the lips. Submaxillary glands swollen and hard.

Teeth

      Drawing in a hollow tooth, when eating cold things, not from cold drink.

Tongue etc.

      Taste; bitter.

Speech difficult, from lingual paralysis, Tongue swollen, painful, stiff.

Throat

      Pressure in the oesophagus, as if a round body (globus hystericus) were ascending from the stomach.

Desires Aversions

      Craving coffee, salt, or sour things.

Loss of appetite.

Thirst.

Eating and Drinking

      Sour rising from the stomach, after eating.

Cold eating: 10:. Cold drink:. After drinking: After taking small quantity of milk, sudden distention of the abdomen.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations; offensive; frequent, empty; with heart burn.

Vomiting: violent; of block masses, like coffee grounds, in clear, sour water; of chocolate colored masses, sour and acrid.

Stomach

      Sense of fulness and repletion in the stomach.

Violent pains in the stomach, always two or three hours after eating, but also at night; somewhat better in the knee-elbow position.

Swelling in the region of the pylorus.

Pressing, burning, squeezing pain, extending from the pit of the stomach into the back and shoulders.

Pressure and raw sore feeling at the pit of the stomach.

Hypochondria

      Stitches in the hepatic region.

Painful tearing in the hepatic region.

Hard swelling of the liver.

Abdomen

      Swelling of the abdomen.

Stitches extending from abdomen to right side of chest.

Pinching pains in abdomen, as if diarrhoea would set in.

Colic from incarcerated flatus.

Cutting in the abdomen before the emission of flatus. Very sensitive across the abdomen.

Aching pain in the hypogastric region.

Forcing-down feeling in hypogastric region.

Stool etc.

      Frequent ineffectual urging to stool; or small quantity passed each time.

Stools: undigested, painless; involuntary during sleep; painful, diarrhoeic, hard with tenesmus.

Burning in the rectum during stool.

After each stool trembling weakness.

Frequent stitches in the anus.

Urine

      Pale; white, turbid; with grey or white sediment.

During micturition, flow intermits.

Sharp, lancinating pain in neck of bladder.

Frequent micturition at night.

Immediately after urinating, burning in the urethra, morning.

Male Sexual Organs

      Sexual desire without erection.

Emission without lewd dreams: Discharge of prostatic fluid on every change of emotion, without voluptuous thoughts; with itching of prepuce.

Bad effects from suppressed sexual desire or from excessive indulgence.

Female Sexual Organs

      Induration and enlargement of the ovary, with lancinating pains.

Stinging in the neck of the uterus.

Induration and prolapsus at the same time.

Fibroids with pricking pains:.

Burning, sore, aching sensation in the region of the uterus.

At every menstrual effort breasts become sore and painful.

Pressure from above downwards, and drawing in legs during menses.

Dysmenorrhoea, with shooting pain in left chest.

Menses: suppressed; too late and scanty; preceded by melancholy, followed by acrid leucorrhoea.

Leucorrhoea; thick milky, with contractive, labor like colic, coming from both sides; of white, acrid mucus, causing burning.

Before the discharge of leucorrhoea, griping in abdomen.

Induration of the vulva from injuries.

Severe stitches in the vulva.

Violent itching of the vulva.

Large pimple on the mons veneris, painful to touch.

Pregnancy

      Terrible nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Rigidity of the os uteri during labor.

Cough during pregnancy, worse at night.

Tumors in mammae, with piercing pains, worse at night, gland abnormally tender.

Hardness of the right mammae, with painfulness to touch, and nightly stitches in it.

Stitches as with needles in the left mamma.

Shriveling of the mammae, with increased sexual desire.

Larynx

      Dry spot in the larynx, with almost constant irritation to cough.

Hoarseness.

Breathing

      Asthmatic paroxysms come on in wet weather; face bluish-red.

Cough

      Powerful, spasmodic paroxysms, excited by itching and tickling in the chest and throat, or by a dry spot in the larynx, worse at night and when lying down.

Expectoration during the day; difficult; bloody copious and purulent, sometimes hardened; expectoration, of putrid taste and smell.

Cough: lose, with inability to expectorate, must swallow what is raised; spasmodic, dry, worse evenings and night, very fatiguing.

Lungs

      Sharp thrusts directly through the chest, from sternum to spine, while sitting.

Violent stitches in right chest about nipple, on every inspiration, while walking, worse from hard pressure with hand.

Heart Pulse

      Violent palpitation after drinking.

Pulse unequal in strength and sometimes irregular in rhythm; insufficiency of the mitral valve.

Outer Chest

      The clothes lie like a weight on the chest and shoulders.

Neck Back

      Stitches in small of back, with drawing through lumber vertebrae, while standing.

Upper Limbs

      Shoulders feel bruised and sore.

Cracking in the wrist-joint.

Yellow nails.

Itching on the dorsum of the finger.

Lower Limbs

      Sensation of weakness, even to trembling, in the right thigh, while walking.

Pain in the knee like from fatigue.

Cracking of the knee-joint.

From Slight exposure of the feet he catches cold.

Red spots on the calves, turning yellow or green, as from contusion, preventing movement.

Limbs in General

      Trembling.

Difficulty in using the limbs; unable to walk.

All the joints pain as if beaten; unpainful lameness.

Sick and faint early in the morning in bed; fainting fits.

Sleep

      Stupid in the morning.

Great heat, internal and external with great nervousness.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
