Mind

      Forgetfulness.

Misplaces words, and tendency to express himself wrongly.

Thinking is difficult.

Mania a potu, with delirious talk about fire, rats, mice and murder.

Disinclination for every kind of work, Depression and melancholy; tearfulness.

Apprehensive mood : as if some misfortune were about to happen.

Shuddering and dread as evening draws near.

Fear seemingly starting from pit of stomach.

Fears she will lose her reason; or that people will observe her confusion of mind.

Great anxiety and palpitation of heart.

Irritable without cause; peevishness and obstinacy.

Restless mood, with gloominess and anxiety.

Sensorium

      Vertigo : when walking in open air, as if he would reel, especially when turning the head quickly; on going up stairs; worse in the morning, with nausea and vomiting; abdominal congestion; hypertrophy of left ventricle; amenorrhoea gradually developed.

Rush of blood to head, with heat, redness and puffiness of the face; worse from alcoholic drink : worse in the morning when awaking; worse after mental exertion.

Continued dulness of the head, as if too full.

Feeling of fulness in head; dulness and feeling of stupidity.

Heaviness in forehead; worse when reading or writing.

Inner Head

      Frequent one-sided headache, always with much empty eructation.

Stupefying, pressing ache in the forehead, as in vertigo. during rest and motion.

Stitching headache above the left temple.

Headache begins in occiput and spreads to top of head, so severe she thinks the head will burst, and that she will go crazy.

Throbbing headache in middle of brain every morning, lasts all day.

Headache : worse going up stairs, talking, or walking, in hot sun or from taking cold; chronic, from brainfag; better from tight bandaging, closing the eyes, vomiting mucus and bile, lying down or pressure with the cold hand.

Icy-coldness in and on the head; also one-sided; congestion alternating with icy-cold sensation.

Headache from overlifting, or other muscular strain.

Outer Head

      Large open fontanelles, head large.

Whitish yellow scales of dandruff; scalp sensitive; hair dry, falls out on sides of head; head feels cold.

Pimples on the forehead.

Thick scabs, bleeding when picked, itching slightly.

Thick scabs, with yellow pus; spreading to the face.

Icy-coldness on the head.

Burning on top of head.

Scratches the head impatiently on awaking or being aroused from sleep.

Eyes

      Farsightedness.

Sensitiveness to light; photophobia.

Like a shadow before the eyes, obscuring one side of the object; much dilated, Dancing wavelets before the eyes which are very annoying.

Ophthalmia : from taking cold; entrance of foreign body; in the newborn; scrofulous.

Opacity of cornea, maculae, ulcers and fungus haematodes; transverse calcareous band of the cornea.

Interstitial keratitis.

Stitches in the inner canthus.

Stinging pains; worse from candle-light.

Itching in the eyes and canthi.

Sensation of coldness, heat, even burning in the eyes.

Swelling and redness of the eyelids, with nightly agglutination; during the day full of gum, with heat, smarting pain and lachrymation.

Eyes become inflamed and injected at every exposure to cold.

Quivering in the upper eyelid.

Suppurating fistula lachrymalis.

Ears

      Hardness of hearing, also after suppression of intermittent by quinine.

Singing and roaring or crackling in the ears.

Cracking in the ears when chewing.

Strange and peculiar noise in the ears when swallowing.

Pulsating in the ears.

Inflammation and swelling of outer and inner ear.

Purulent, offensive discharge from the ears.

Polypus of the ear.

Swelling in front of left ear, painful to touch.

Nose

      Impaired smell.

Very offensive smell in nose, as from dung, or rotten eggs.

Severe fluent coryza, with headache.

Frequent sneezing without coryza, or with dry coryza.

Dryness of the nose, or stopped by fetid yellow pus.

Catarrhal symptoms attended with great hunger, a sort of metastasis from the nose to the abdomen as when the coryza ceases colic sets in.

Sore, ulcerated nostrils.

Bleeding of the nose in the morning.

At night the nose is dry and obstructed, while by day it is moist and free. Ozaena.

Nasal polypi.

Swelling of the nose; also at the root.

Face

      Face : pale, bloated, blue rings around the eyes; yellow; pale, thin; old, wrinkled, with retarded dentition.

Face feels as if it were swollen.

Rending pains in facial bones.

Moist, scurfy eruption on cheeks and forehead with burning pain; itching and eruption in face, and in whiskers.

Lower Face

      Eruption on the lips and mouth.

Swelling of the upper lip; in the morning.

Pain from right mental foramen along lower jaw to ear, worse cold air, better warmth.

Cracked lips; corners ulcerated.

Painful swelling of the submaxillary glands.

Teeth

      Toothache: after drinking cold liquids, or excited by draught or cold; drawing, shooting or boring; during and after menstruation : during pregnancy; worse from warm or cold drinks.

Teeth particularly sensitive to cold air.

Offensive smell from the teeth.

Gums painfully tender; swelling, bleeding.

Difficult dentition.

Fistula dentalis on lower jaw.

Tongue etc.

      Taste; sour; bitter; offensive.

Difficult, indistinct speech : also in ranula.

Tongue coated white.

Dryness of tongue at night, and morning on awaking.

Swelling of sublingual glands. Ranula; burning in the mouth.

Burning pain at the tip of tongue, as from soreness; worse from warm food or drink.

Soreness of the tongue, either on the tip, sides, or dorsum; can scarcely talk or eat.

Mouth

      Mouth slimy; blisters on the inner surface of cheek and tongue.

Canker sores, especially during teething.

Throat

      Inflammation swelling of the palate and uvula or tonsils, with sensation as if the throat were contracted when swallowing.

Pain in the throat extending to the ears.

Spasmodic contraction of the oesophagus.

Desires Aversions

      Great desire for eggs; desire for wine, salt or sweet things.

Ravenous hunger in the morning.

Loss of appetite; but when he began to eat, he relished it.

Will not eat meat; aversion to smoking tobacco.

Great thirst.

Eating and Drinking

      After milk, nausea and sour eructation, water-brash.

After meals, heat or flatulency, with nausea; pain in the stomach and abdomen.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Eructations : tasting of the food eaten; bitter; sour; of tasteless fluid; of food; burning.

Burning extending to throat. Heart burn.

Nausea : mornings, with qualmishness and shuddering; toward

evening, during dentition.

Vomit : sour; of bitter slime; of what has been eaten; black; bloody; of milk in thick curds. Dentition.

Stomach

      Pressing pain in stomach, as if a load or stone were in it, after moderate supper; worse from motion, better lying quiet on back.

Pit of stomach swollen like a saucer turned bottom up; painful to pressure.

Pressing, pinching, or spasmodically squeezing and contracting pains in stomach, particularly after meals, with vomiting of food.

Some forms of gastralgia, with great anguish, with sensation of fixed weight in stomach.

Cutting pain in the epigastrium.

Hypochondria

      Tight clothes about the hypochondria are unbearable.

Feeling as if laced below the hypochondria, with trembling and throbbing in the epigastric region.

Tightness in both hypochondria.

Pressure in hepatic region, with every step, when walking.

Stitches in hepatic region during or after stooping.

Abdomen

      Abdomen much distended; hard.

Relieves pain attending passage of biliary calculi.

Frequent severe cramp in the intestinal canal, especially in the evening and night, with coldness of the thighs.

Sensation of pressure or pressing from the above downward, or from before backward, in the abdomen.

Peritonitis when the pains are relieved by cold applications.

Feeling of coldness in the abdomen.

Mesenteric glands swollen and hard in children.

Obstructed flatulence.

Writhing, twisting pain in abdomen about umbilical region.

Flatulency and gurgling in right side of abdomen.

Swelling and painfulness of the inguinal glands.

Bearing down in uterine region.

Stool etc.

      Crawling in the rectum, like from worms.

Cramp in rectum, the whole forenoon, griping and stitching, with great anxiety, was not able to sit, had to walk-about.

Stools : frequent, first hard, then pasty, then liquid, thin, offensive, like bad eggs; yellowish, grey, or clay-like, fecal; whitish, watery, worse in the after-part of the day, often of sour smell; undigested, hard.

Constipation, stools large and hard; containing undigested food; often with slime.

Stools look like lumps of chalk, in children during dentition.

Discharge of blood from the rectum.

Oozing of fluid from rectum, smelling like herring brine.

Hemorrhoids protruding, painful when walking, better when sitting, cause pain during stool; bleed profusely.

Intense aching and shooting in rectum, hours after stool.

Feeling of heaviness in lower portion of rectum.

Great irritability of the anus. Ascarides; itching commencing toward bedtime, and proving very trouble some for hours.

Burning : in the rectum; in the anus.

Hemorrhoids which make even a loose stool painful; they are often painful when walking.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
