      Night blooming Cereus. RUBINI. Cactaceae.

Mind

      Taciturn, unwilling to speak a word, or to answer.

Cries, knows not why; consolation aggravates.

Unconquerable sadness.

Fear of death : he believes his disease incurable.

Hypochondriacal.

Sensorium

      Vertigo from congestion; face red, bloated, pulsation in the brain; madness, anxiety.

Inner Head

      Congestion to the brain, bloodshot eyes, coma, suffocation, flushes in face; fever, from exposure to sun’s rays.

Heavy pain on the vertex, better by pressure, but worse from talking or strong light.

Pulsation in temple, as if the skull would burst; intolerable at night.

Headache worse right side, caused by excitement, as at opera; wine; belated dinner.

Eyes

      Dimness of the sight; weakness of sight returning periodically.

Ears

      Hardness of hearing from congestion; pulsation in the ears; noise like running water or buzzing, after otitis from checked sweat.

Nose

      Profuse nosebleed soon ceasing.

Face

      Face : blue; cold sweat; pale; flushed.

Prosopalgia right sided, chronic; worse from slightest exertion, tolerable only when lying still in bed brought on by wine, music, strong light, or missing dinner at the usual hour.

Mouth

      Fetid breath in the morning.

Throat

      Constriction of throat, exciting a constant desire to swallow.

Constriction of the oesophagus : must drink large quantities to force the fluid into the stomach.

Desires Aversions

      Loss of appetite.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating, weight and distress in the stomach.

After dinner, pulsation (in coeliac axis) behind stomach.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Nausea in the morning, continues all day.

Acrid, sour fluid, rising into the throat and mouth, making food taste acid.

Vomiting of blood.

Stomach

      Constrictive feeling at the scrobiculus cordis, extending to the hypochondria, impeding breathing.

Burning : pulsating in the stomach.

Hypochondria

      Engorgement of liver; acute or chronic from heart disease.

Feeling as of a cord tightly tied around lower part of chest; marking out the attachment of the diaphragm.

Sharp pains shooting through diaphragm and up into chest.

Abdomen

      Insupportable heat in abdomen, as though something burned him internally.

Wandering pains in the umbilical region, which cease and recur periodically.

Stool etc.

      Morning diarrhoea, preceded by great pains.

Sensation of weight in anus, strong desire for stool, but nothing passes.

Pricking in anus, as from pins, ceasing on slight friction.

Urine

      Constant desire to urinate.

Urine : profuse, straw-colored; passes in drops, with much burning; constriction of neck of bladder; suppressed in fever.

Haematuria; urination prevented by clots.

Female Sexual Organs

      Menses too soon; black, pitch-like.

Menstruation with constrictive spasm of uterus; pains agonizing, worse evening; flow scanty, ceases when lying down.

Painful constriction around the pelvis, extending gradually towards the stomach, causing a sensation as of a great blow in the region of kidneys, making her cry out.

Pulsating pain in ovarian regions; pains extend down thighs, return periodically at the same time each day.

Pregnancy

      Inflammation of the mammae: sensation of fulness in the chest; oversensitive to cold air.

Larynx

      Voice low, hoarse; constriction of the chest.

Breathing

      Oppression of breathing on going up stairs.

Oppression of the chest as from a great weight, difficult breathing; uneasiness, as if an iron band prevented normal motion of chest.

Cough

      Spasmodic cough, with copious mucous expectoration.

Cough, with thick yellow sputa, like boiled starch.

Lungs

      Haemoptysis, with marked arterial excitement (but less fever and restlessness than Aconite) convulsive cough, Bronchitis, with palpitation of the heart; bronchial catarrh, from overaction of the heart, Continual rattling of mucus; oppressed breathing; cannot lie in a horizontal position; attacks of anxiety and suffocation.

Prickling pains in chest, bloody sputa; hard, quick, vibrating pulse; sharp, wandering pains in chest and scapular region.

Feeling of constriction in the chest, impeding speech.

Congestion to the chest, which prevents lying down; palpitation; constriction of the chest.

Heart Pulse

      Sensation of constriction in heart, as if an iron hand prevented its normal movements.

Pricking pains impeding breathing and movements of the body; oppression; cannot lie on the left side; blue face; pulse quick, throbbing, tense and hard.

Dull, heavy pain, worse from pressure; suffocating respiration; face blue; oedema, especially of the left hand and of the legs to the knees; feet icy-cold; pulse intermittent.

Pains in the apex of the heart shooting down left arm to the ends of the fingers; feeble pulse; dyspnoea.

Endocardial murmurs; excessive impulse; increased precordial dulness, enlarged right ventricle.

Palpitation with vertigo, loss of consciousness, dyspnoea; worse walking, at night, lying on the left side, at the approach of the menses and from any exertion, Palpitation preceded by rumbling in the stomach.

Palpitation of long standing, caused by an unfortunate love affair.

Irregularity of the heart’s action, at times frequent, at others slow; great irritation of the cardiac nerves; enlarged left ventricle.

Outer Chest

      Sensation of constriction in the middle of the sternum, as if compressed by iron pincers, with difficult breathing; worse from motion.

Rheumatism of the muscles of the chest.

Upper Limbs

      Formication and weight in the arms.

OEdema of the hands, mostly of the left,.

Lower Limbs

      Restlessness of legs, cannot keep them still.

OEdema of legs, skin shining; dents remain a long time.

Position etc.

      Motion, Walking, Ascending, Exertion, Lying. Cannot lie horizontally on left side, Talking Excitement, wine.

Nerves

      General weakness, prostration, great depression, sleepless. Fainting.

Sleep

      Sleepless without cause; or from pulsation in pit of stomach or in ears.

Delirium at night; on awaking it ceases, but returns in sleep.

Time

      Morning, evening, Night, midnight 11 A.M. and 11 P.M., After dinner and eating: Belated dinner : All day :.

Temperature and Weather

      Exposure to sun : Cold air : Strong light :.

Chill Fever Sweat

      Coldness in back and cold hands.

Chill not relieved by covering; returns the same hour each day; regular paroxysms at 11 A.M. and 11 P.M.

Fever, intermittent, with congestion to head, flushes in face, suppressed urine, pains in bladder, lancinating in heart, violent vomiting; sweat does not appear; after exposure to sun.

Heat after chill, with dyspnoea, headache and thirst; with insensibility till midnight, then shortness of breath and inability to remain lying; followed by profuse sweat, with great thirst,.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
