      Bromine. Hering Elementary substance.

Mind

      In evening when alone, felt as if he would see something if he should around; as if some one were back of him.

Expects to see something jump around the floor.

Desire for mental labor, preceded by aversion to his own profession.

Crying and lamentations, with hoarse voice.

Great depression of spirits.

Low-spirited and out of humor.

Sensorium

      Vertigo : if he puts his foot on a bridge; form sight of running water; in damp weather; with nausea and nosebleed; with tendency to fall backwards.

Sensation deep in brain, as if vertigo would come on, or as if he would lose his consciousness.

Inner Head

      Headache; heavy pressure in forehead in heat of the sun, passes off when in the shade.

Left sided headache.

Headache after drinking milk.

Outer Head

      Pains in the bones of the head, fore and back part; towards evening in damp weather.

Crawling beneath the skin of the occiput.

Scalp tender; covered with an eruption, with dirty looking and offensive-smelling discharge.

Eyes

      Sensitiveness to bright light.

Dilation of the pupils.

Lachrymation of right eye, with swelling of lachrymal gland.

Stitches through left eye.

Throbbing stitches in left upper lid, extending to brow, forehead and left temple; worse on touching it and from motion; bitter during rest.

Ears

      Ringing in right ear. Roaring in ears.

Stitches in the ears. Discharge from the ears.

Throbbing and burning in ears, may be succeeded by burning through whole body, Hard swelling of left parotid gland, feeling warm to touch.

Suppuration of left parotid, edges of the opening smooth; discharge watery nd excoriating; swelling remaining hard and unyielding. After scarlatina.

Nose

      Coryza with sneezing.

Severe coryza, right nostril stopped up and sore through-out; later the left.

Corrosive soreness on margins of nostrils and under the nose, with stoppage or with scurfs.

Nosebleed, with relief of chest and eye symptoms.

Face

      Face : pale, or red, or alternately so; bluish tinge turning purplish, with the cough in croup.

Greyish, earthy complexion.

Heat in cheeks, first in right, later in left.

Sensation as of spider-web on face.

Lower Face

      Boring pain going to the right, or on right side of lower jaw, Shooting pain on vermillion border of upper lip; after-wards yellow spots, which open and discharge a yellow fluid.

Painless swelling of left submaxillary gland.

Teeth

      Decayed teeth, sensitive to cold water.

Gums pain in the morning.

Tongue etc.

      Taste : sweetish : salty; bitter; sour; acrid.

Water tastes salty, in the morning, fasting.

Dry sensation on the tongue.

Burning on the under surface of the tongue.

Stinging in the tip of the tongue.

Mouth

      Burning sensation in the mouth, oesophagus and stomach.

Mouth dry and parched.

Aphthae, with affection of the eyes.

Throat

      Elongation of the uvula.

Scraping in the throat.

Swelling of mucous membrane of fauces and pharynx.

Tonsils swollen, inflamed; constant pain in the throat, swallowing difficult, fluids worse then solids. After measles.

Right side of fauces dark red and dry, swallowing painful.

Desires Aversions

      Desires for acids, which aggravate the symptoms and cause diarrhoea.

Aversion to the customary tobacco smoking; it causes nausea and vertigo.

Aversion to drinking cold water.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating oysters, diarrhoea; after acids, diarrhoea.

Gastric symptoms better from black coffee.

Nausea and pains in stomach, better after eating. See.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Hiccough and nausea.

Eructations : empty; tasteless; tasting like foul eggs; with vomiting of mucus.

Nausea and retching better after eating.

Stomach

      Pressure in stomach, like from a stone.

Pain in the stomach increased by pressure.

Hypochondria

      Stitches in the hypochondria; also from right to left.

Abdomen

      Tympanitic distention of the abdomen and passage of much wind.

Griping and colicky pains.

Stool etc.

      Blind, painful hemorrhoids internally during and after stool : worse from cold or warm water; better from wetting with saliva.

Stools : painless, odorless, like scrapings from intestines; bright yellow, preceded by cutting and rumbling in abdomen; light yellow, slimy mucus; black fecal.

Diarrhoea : after every meal; at night.

Stool : hard, tough, brown and glistening; breaks to pieces like sheep dung.

Urine

      Continued desire to urinate, with tickling sensation in tip of urethra.

Dribbling of urine, with burning, after urinating.

Urine : scanty and dark; turbid, and deposits a whitish sediment adhering to the vessel; leaves a red coating on vessel; contains large flakes of white mucus.

Male Sexual Organs

      Increased sexual desire.

Nightly emission.

Hard, painless swelling of left testicle, painful when driving.

Coldness of left testicle.

Female Sexual Organs

      Dull, constant pain in left ovary.

Hard swelling in ovarian region.

Menses : too early and too profuse; bright red blood; passive flow with much exhaustion; membranous shreds may pass off.

Suppression of menses. Scirrhus mammae.

Headache on appearance of menses.

Violent contractive spasm before or during menses, lasting hours; leaving the abdomen sore.

Loud emission of flatus from vagina.

Vagina painful, as if sore.

Pregnancy

      Hard, uneven tumor in right mamma, firmly adherent to its surroundings, with lancinating pains, worse at night.

Larynx

      Cold sensation in larynx, with cold feeling when inspiring, after breakfast; better after shaving.

Larynx painful to touch; construction in larynx.

Scraping and rawness in larynx, provoking cough.

Contracted sensation internally, in the trachea, or feeling as if the pit of throat were pressed against the trachea.

Sensation of smoothness and emptiness, at a small spot in the larynx.

Voice : husky; hoarse, cannot speak clearly, loss of voice; weak and soft, with raw, scraped feeling in throat.

Breathing

      Gasping for breath, with wheezing and rattling in larynx, and spasmodic closure of glottis.

Deep, forcible inspiration, is necessary, from time to time.

Difficulty of breathing; cannot inspire deep enough.

Sensation as if the air passages were full of smoke.

Asthma of sailors, as soon as they “go ashore.” Difficult breathing, must sit up in bed at night. Emphysema, rattling of mucus without choking.

Cough

      Excited by : tickling in larynx; scraping and rawness in larynx; deep inspiration.

Cough; with sudden paroxysms of suffocation, on swallowing; respiration very short; obliged to catch for breath.

Whooping-cough, with croupish hoarseness of the cough.

Cough night and day, sounds loose, but no expectoration; aggravation from exercise and on entering a warm room.

Sensation of constriction impedes respiration, with dry, tickling cough.

Much rattling in larynx when coughing.

Lungs

      Affections begin in bronchi and ascend to larynx.

Sensation of weakness and exhaustion in the chest.

Pressure in upper part of chest.

Sharp stitches in right side of chest, especially when walking rapidly.

Cutting pains running upwards. Phthisis.

Right lung most affected.

Paralytic drawing pain through left chest, toward scapula and into left arm.

Hepatization of lower lobes in pneumonia.

Heart Pulse

      Pulse much accelerated.

Violent palpitation of the heart in the evening, so that she cannot lie on the left side.

Cutting pains running upwards. Heart disease.

Outer Chest

      Pressure below left clavicle.

Tearing in left clavicle.

Stitching pain from mamma to the axilla cannot bear pressure.

Neck Back

      Stiffness of neck.

Tearing in right lumbar and dorsal muscles, increased by moving these parts.

Sore pain in small of back, unchanged by motion.

Upper Limbs

      Great restlessness and jactitation of arms.

Left arm feels paralyzed.

Weakness of the arms. Tearing in the arms, especially in hands and fingers, Icy-cold forearms or only cold hands.

Lower Limbs

      Pressive bone pain in left leg.

Boring pains in one or both tibiae.

Position etc.

      Rest Motion : Walking : Riding on horseback gives general relief. Exercise : Exertion : Driving :. Must sit up : Cannot lie on left side : Mental labor :.

Nerves

      Tremulousness all over; great languor and debility.

Sleep

      Continued yawning with the respiratory troubles; child yawns frequently, and is drowsy.

Awakes unrefreshed; it seems impossible to rise.

Dreams : vivid; of ascending a height; of climbing a steep; of journeyings; of quarrels; of dying; of coffins and funerals.

Jumping up, out of sleep, with whistling breathing.

Starts from sleep with cough, drink relieves it.

Time

Chill Fever Sweat

      Chill every other day, with shaking, yawning and stretching, and with cold feet.

Hands cold and moist.

Internal burning heat, like between the skin and flesh.

Sweat on the palms.

Sweat from the least exertion or exercise.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
