Thuja Occidentalis


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Thuja Occidentalis in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      Dr. Hahnemann found Thuja occidentalis as an antidote to sycotic miasm. It acts chiefly on the mucous membranes of GENITO-URINARY tract; intestines; SKIN; mind; nerves; glands, occiput and left side. It is the remedy for soft; exuberant; fungoid tissue; polypi, condylomata, warts; pediculated; black, suppressed. Hydrogenoid or lymphatic constitution. Great prostration and rapid emaciation. The patient is exhausted and soft, body feels thin and delicate, frail. Deadness of the affected part. Discharges are foul, acrid, musty, rancid or of sweetish odour. Trickling, in urethra. Burning, sticking, numbing, drawing or wandering pains worse warmth. Oily; stools, skin, sweat. Flesh feels as if beaten off the bones. Oedema about the joints. Jerking; of the upper part of the body; of spinal origin; chorea. Sensation of lightness of body when walking. Vaccinosis; never well since vaccination; neuralgia, skin troubles etc. Crying babies; with a sycotic taint from the father; from congenital inguinal hernia. Pains keep extending from their original site. Neurasthenia; prostatic. Rheumatism. Paralysis. Suppressed gonorrhoea. Ill effects of tobacco. Suppressed sycosis, figwarts. Aneurism by anastomosis; swelling of the blood-vessels. Stitching, tearing pains in the glands as if they were being torn to pieces.

Worse

      COLD; DAMP; heat; of bed. Periodically-3 a.m. and 3 p.m. Yearly. Increasing moon. Moonlight. During menses. Urinating. Tea. Coffee. Sweets. Fat food. Onions. Sun. Chewing. Bright light. Mercury. Syphilis. Stretching. Coitus. Closing eyes.

Better

      Warm; wrapping; air, wind. Free secretions. Sneezing. Motion. Crossing legs. Touch. Drawing up limbs. Rubbing. Scratching.

Mind

      Fixed ideas; as if a strange person at his side; as if soul and body were separated; as if body were fragile, made of glass; as of a live thing internally; as of being in the hands of a stronger power. Hurried with ill humour; talks hastily; swallows words. Sad. Aversion to life. Over-excited, angry or anxious about trifles. Music causes weeping, and trembling of feet. Nervous; begins to twitch on approach of strangers. Cannot concentrate. Insane women will not be touched or approached. Fear; on seeing green stripes. Speech slow, hunts for words. Irritable, jealous, quarrelsome, towards husband or mother, controls herself among strangers and doctors. Cretinism. Mental depression, after childbirth. Walks in circle in room.

Head

      Vertigo as from motion of a swing; everything seems to jump; on closing eyes, looking upwards or sideways. Pain as if pierced by a nail. Headache worse sexual excess; from tea; better bending head backwards. Tearing, jerking pain. White scaly dandruff. Hair dry, split; and falls out. Sweat smelling like honey.

Eyes

      Blood red; full of tears; stand open. Lids heavy as lead. Jagged iris. Iritis. Sclerotitis. Styes and tarsal tumours. Feels as if cold air were streaming out of the head through eye better when warmly covered. Photopsies, beyond visual field. Floating (green) stripes. Exophthalmos; from tumours behind eyeball.

Ears

      Otorrhoea; watery, purulent; putrid. Cracking when empty swallowing. Noise in ear as from boiling water.

Nose

      Bloody scabs; or briny odour in nose. Blows thick, green mucous. Epistaxis, worse after being over-heated.

Face

      Pale, waxy, shiny; dark under eyes. Netted with spider-like veins. Boring in malar bones (left) better by touch. Skin greasy. Neuralgia; from suppressed gonorrhoea or eczema of ear. Tumour on cheek.

Mouth

      Teeth; decay at the edge of gums, crumble; turn yellow. Gnawing pain in teeth worse cold, tea and blowing nose. Pyorrhoea. Ranula. Varicose veins on tongue and mouth. Aphthae; ulcers in the mouth. White blisters on sides close to the root of tongue, painfully sore. Frequently bites the tongue, from swelling of it. Sweetish taste; with gonorrhoea. Becomes dry while chewing food.

Throat

      Much mucous in throat hawked up with difficulty.

Stomach

      Noisy swallowing; loud belchings. Rancid or greasy eructations. Aversion to potatoes and fresh meat, onions disagree. Tea drinker’s dyspepsia. Unable to eat breakfast. Desires cold drinks and salt.

Abdomen

      Big, puffed; protrudes here and there as from arm of foetus; motions as if something alive (in old maids). Indurations in abdomen. Rumbling, flatulence; upper part drawn in. Soreness of navel. Cutting, squeezing in hypogastrium. Ileus. Gurgling in bowels; then painless watery grass green stools. Stools gurgle or pop out worse breakfast. Stools; hard; oily; black, lumps, mixed with gushing water; hurried, explosive, gassy, spraying. Cutting, squeezing in groins. Piles swollen, painful. Anus fissured, warty; oozing from. Perineum moist. Tenesmus with rigidity of penis. Perineal fistula.

Urinary

      Cutting squeezing in bladder and urethra. Bladder feels paralyzed, must wait for urination. Frequent, hasty; with pain in other parts; urging, with profuse flow. Urine; burns, dribbles, foul. Feels as if a drop was running down urethra; after urination. Forward cutting in urethra on urinating. Urinary stream split and small. Pains from left kidney to epigastrium worse motion. Lithaemia. Diabetes mellitus. Involuntary urination at night, when coughing. Foamy urine.

Male

      Gonorrhoea, scalding when urinating. Rheumatism from checked gonorrhoea. Prostatic enlargement. Offensive genitals; sweetish smelling sweat on scrotum. Testes feel bruised; left drawn up. Swelling of prepuce. Excrescences of prepuce and glans. Chordee worse at night. Semen offensive.

Female

      Vagina; very sensitive, prevents coition; itching. Left ovary inflamed, with tearing pain worse menses. Leucorrhoea; profuse, thick, greenish, from one period to another. Erosion of cervix. Foetus moves violently, awakes her. Abortion at the 3rd month. Cauliflower excrescences bleeding easily. Recto-vaginal fistula. Sweaty organs before menses. Retracted nipples. Menses too early, too short.

Respiratory

      Short difficult breathing worse from deep breathing and talking. Cough only during the day or worse as soon as he eats or drinks anything cold. Expectoration; easy when lying down; green, taste like old cheese. Asthma worse night; of sycotic children. Chest pains take various directions. Skin of clavicles blue. Brown spots on chest. Polypus of vocal cords. In asthma if Arsenicum fails to cure, even though seems indicated, Thuja and Nat-sul will take up the work and complete the cure.

Heart

      Anxious palpitation; on waking; in the morning.

Neck and Back

      Pulsation in the back. Pressing pain over kidney region. Atrophy of long muscles. Spine curved. Stands bent forward. Blood boils.

Extremities

      Cracking in joints, when stretching them. Fingers cold, numb, as if dead, on waking at night. Crawling or inflamed finger or toe tips. Hip joints give way when walking. Limbs feel as if made of wood or glass and would break easily. Limbs feels paralyzed. Knees restless. Painful brittle; crumbling; discoloured, distorted. Coxalgia with tender soles. Foul, acrid foot sweat. Nails; ribbed, soft, lengthening of limb. Ingrowing toe nails.

Sleep

      Sleepless when lying on left side. Persistent insomnia. Dreams of death; of falling from a height.

Fever

      Shaking chill; with yawning; worse urinating not better by heat. Heat rises into chest; with icy cold hands; nose bleed or cough. Sweat only on uncovered parts; with dry heat on covered ones; with cold hands better washing. Sweat profuse on genitals; gushing, worse company; foul, oily, pungent, sweetish, sometimes garlicky, staining yellow.

Skin

      Brown; spotted; dirty; hairy. Eruptions itch or burn violently worse cold bathing. Moist foul polypi. Naevi. Eruptions only on covered parts. Ulcers flat, with bluish bottom. Stinging, jumping out feeling. Foul pustules with sunken apices. Luxurient growth of hair on parts otherwise not covered by hair. Herpes zoster.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
