Syphilinum


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Syphilinum in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      A nosode prepared from syphilitic virus. Affects the mucous membranes, nerves and bones. In chronic cases when the reaction is poor and indicated remedy gives partial relief esp. when there is hereditary tendency to alcoholism or history of SYPHILITIC TAINT. Great weakness with very few symptoms; or utter prostration and debility; in the morning; on waking. Multiphase symptoms. Ulcerations; stubborn. Dwarfed, shrivelled up, old looking babies and children, bald head, pouting lips and big belly. Foul odour of the body. Violent, or linear pains. Succession of abscesses. Foul or green pus. Knots in muscles. Pains or other conditions worse and better gradually. Epilepsy worse after menses. Foetid discharges. Persistent pains in any part of the body. Cold pain. Crying infants; who begin crying immediately after birth. Slowly advancing hemiplegia. As of hot water in blood vessels. Bones; sore, caries, curvature of. Exostoses. Glands enlarged. Hodgkin’s disease. Sawing pains in bones.

Worse

      NIGHT. Sundown to sunrise. Damp. Extreme heat or cold. Every alternate full moon. During thunderstorms. In any position. Motion. Raising arms laterally. Squatting. Winter. Summer. Seashore. Protruding tongue.

Better

      Continued or slow motion. Changing positions. High altitudes. Applied heat. During day.

Mind

      Hopeless despair of recovery. Antisocial. Horrid depression. Cross, irritable, peevish. Feels as if going insane or being paralysed. A far away feeling-says he is not himself and he cannot feel like himself, with apathy and indifference to future. Impulse to wash hands. Terrible dread of night. Loss of memory, does not remember, faces, names, events, places etc., but remembers everything previous to his disease. Very nervous, laughs or weeps without cause. Does not want to be soothed. Nightly delirium. Syphilitic insanity. Aversion to company. Sad and lamenting.

Head

      Deep crushing head pains across the base of temples. Linear head pains. Beats head against the wall. Feels pulled back. Cerebral softening. Hair fall profusely. Vertex as if bursting. Tubercles all over the scalp.

Eyes

      Chronic recurrent phlyctenular keratitis better cool bathing; with intense photophobia and lachrymation. Ophthalmia; neonatorum. Glimmering vision. Vertical diplopia. Ptosis. Feeling of cold air blowing on the eye. Squint. Amaurosis; atrophy of optic nerve. Spots on cornea.

Ears

      Deafness, without any obvious cause; nervous with cachexia. Calcareous deposit on tympanum. Abscess of the middle ear.

Nose

      Ozaena; offensive, thick yellow-green discharge. Painful to inhaled air. Sinuses, painful. Green lumps from posterior nares. Snuffles. Caries of bones. Septum perforated. Saddle across the bridge of the nose to which Sepia saddle is but a shadow. Attacks of fluent coryza. Itching nostrils.

Face

      Pale, wrinkled; old look. Twitching of muscles. Pain over eyes (right) worse protruding tongue. Paralysis of one side, with difficult speech, mastication and twitching of eyes and lids.

Mouth

      Teeth feel sticky; as of a worm in. Teeth cupped, in children. Feeling as if teeth, had all got out of place. Teeth decay at the edge of gums. Tongue; coated, indented, deep longitudinal cracks along centre, ulcers, smart and burn. Putrid taste; before epileptic fit. Excessive flow of saliva; runs out of mouth during sleep. Aphasia. Paralysis of tongue. Toothache better pressing them together, worse hot or cold things.

Throat

      Sore, right to left worse cold drinks. Chronic hypertrophy of tonsils, with syphilitic taint.

Stomach

      Capricious appetite. Craves alcoholic liquors. Aversion to meat. Total loss of appetite for months. No food agrees, or satisfies him. Vomiting for weeks or months.

Abdomen

      Obstinate constipation. Rectum seems tied up with strictures. Fissures in anus and rectum. Water from enema escapes with pain. Diarrhoea; bilious; painless worse seashore, drives her out of bed about 5 a.m.

Urinary

      Urine frothy; scanty, yellow. Nocturnal enuresis. Passes urine better while standing. Urinates only once during 24 hours but profuse.

Male

      Nodular formation in testes, spermatic cord and scrotum. Chancres. Aching of genitals, cannot sit still.

Female.

     

Female

      Menses having putrid meat-like odour. Yellow, offensive, acrid leucorrhoea so profuse, it soaks through napkins and runs to the heels; with ovarian pain; in sickly nervous women; with itching of the genitals. Habitual abortion. Mammae; sensitive to touch; feel sore, during menses and other times. Ulcers on the vulva with ovarian pain; sensitive to touch. Cutting pain in ovary during coition, at the moment of orgasm.

Respiratory

      Cough dry worse lying on right side; at night. Aphonia. before menses. Chronic asthma; worse in summer, during thunderstorms, at night, humid weather. Continuous pain in the larynx worse touch.

Heart

      Pain from base to apex of heart. Large soft pulse. As if hot water flowing in the veins.

Neck and Back

      Neck feels short. Pain in the back in the region of kidney worse after urinating. Pain at coccyx with sensation as if it is swollen worse sitting.

Extremities

      Pain at the insertion of deltoid worse from raising arm laterally, or in front. Affections of middle fingers. Osteo- sarcoma; in centre of tibia. Itching eruptions about elbows. Cold pain in legs. Festination. Bones pain as if sawed. Bilateral exostoses sore and painful. Shin bones painful better pouring cold water on them. Sciatica worse at night. Muscles knotted; in rheumatism. Soles painful with feeling of contraction worse standing on them. Cannot sit on low chair or squat.

Sleep

      Sleeplessness.

Fever

      Chilly. Sweats at night, with exhaustion.

Skin

      Swollen and blotched. Biting as from bugs. Wandering erysipelas. Conical crusts. Bullae. White or pock mark cicatrices. Distorted nails. Coppery spots.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
