Senecio


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Senecio in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      In eclectic practice it is considered as a regulator of menstrual function, therefore it has a marked action on FEMALE and URINARY ORGANS esp. bladder. Affection of mucous glands causes catarrhal condition of mucous membranes esp. of vagina, bladder and respiratory tract. Lack of reaction in genito-urinary tract. Debilitating or vicarious discharges. Tightness in nose, throat etc. Muscles draw into a knot. Globus. Ill effects of suppressed or delayed menses; wounds. Nervous, pale, weak and sleepless hysterical women. Haemorrhagic tendency; from other organs esp. with suppressed or delayed menses. Dropsy, after haemorrhage.

Worse

      Puberty. Sexual excitement. Dampness. Cold open air. Sitting, must move about (mind).

Better

      Menstruation.

Mind

      Very irritable, whining. Inability to fix mind upon any one subject. Self centered. Elated and sad alternately.

Head

      Wave-like sensation of dizziness from occiput to sinciput. Sharp pain over left eye and through left temple. Headache precedes leucorrhoea and irritation in bladder.

Eyes

      Tears causing itching.

Ears

      Itching in Eustachian tube.

Nose

      Burning in nostrils. Sneezing, with burning in nose. Tightness in nasal passage. Epistaxis or nasal catarrh take the place of menses when suppressed from any cause. Coryza with nosebleed.

Face

      Twitching about mouth.

Throat

      Feels dry and tight, wants to swallow; though painful.

Stomach

      Aversion to all food esp. sweets and coffee which she was very fond of. Nausea and vomiting of renal origin. Sensation of a ball rising from stomach to throat.

Abdomen

      Pain about umbilical region, spreading in all directions better stools; bending double. Ascites from suppressed menses. Stools; thin, watery, mingled with hard lumps of faeces; or thin, dark, bloody with tenesmus.

Urinary

      Heat in neck of bladder; and constant urging with renal pain. Urine; bloody; very hot or with much mucus sediment. Renal colic (right). Nephritis. Dysuria, in women with dysmenorrhoea, or uterine displacement and in children, with headache.

Male

      Lascivious dreams; with involuntary emissions. Prostate gland enlarged, feels hard and swollen to touch.

Female

      Functional amenorrhoea of young girls with backache. Menses; retarded; suppressed, with concomitant symptoms; dropsy, cough, backache etc. Profuse flow of mucous from vagina, from sexual excitation. Sexual irritation causing, itching, burning and swelling of labia. Pains from ovaries to breasts. Leucorrhoea; thick, yellow, profuse, flows down thighs. Feels as if menses would come. Burning in left nipple. Menorrhagia, a copious flow which continues until they become anaemic. Dysmenorrhoea; after abortion.

Respiratory

      Cough tickling with blood-streaked sputum; with suppressed menses. Haemoptysis, with suppressed menses. Loose cough with copious mucous expectoration and laboured breathing.

Back

      Lumbar backache, as if to break; with amenorrhoea. Renal disease.

Extremities

      Wandering rheumatic pains; periodical. Feet cold in bed. Brittle nails.

Sleep

      Many dreams; erotic. Sleepless women with uterine troubles and amenorrhoea. Drowsy during day.

Fever

      Hectic fever, with anorexia.

Skin

      Dry.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
