Onosmodium


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Onosmodium in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      This remedy acts upon nerves and muscles. It causes loss of power of concentration and co-ordination; and disturbance in the sense of proportion. Aching, soreness and stiffness of muscles; after the pain. Prostration, weariness and tiredness; acts as if born tired. Seems to tread on cotton. Staggering. Neuralgic pains. Neurasthenia; sexual; from loss of sexual desire in both sexes.

Worse

      Sprains. EYE-STRAINS. Sexual excess. Darkness. Tight clothing. Warm. Humid air. Jarring.

Better

      Rest. Sleep. Eating. Cold drinks. Undressing.

Mind

      Irresolute. Confused. Forgetful. Slow thinking. Aphasia. Fear of falling on going up or down stairs.

Head

      Migraine. Headache from eye strain and sexual weakness worse dark. Vertigo, with headache; worse lying on left side; raising the hands above the head. Occipital headache as if screwed; worse eye-strain and lying down. Pain up and down from occiput (left) to shoulder worse exertion. Dull heavy up-pressing in occiput.

Eyes

      Aching, heavy, tired and stiff. Eye combined with ovarian symptoms. Misjudges distances. Vision blurred. Colour blindness for red and green.

Throat

      Dry and stiff; all symptoms are better by cold drinks and eating.

Abdomen

      Distended feeling better loosening clothes. Stools yellow, mushy hurrying him out of bed in morning. Craving for ice water and cold drinks.

Urinary

      Urination; frequent, scanty. Aromatic urine.

Male

      Loss of sexual desire. Psychical impotence. Speedy emission, deficient erections. Sexual excitement. Constant severe erections.

Female

      Sexual desire completely destroyed. Pains alternate between ovaries. Uterine pains better undressing and lying on back. Soreness of ovaries with rectum. Feels as if menses would appear. Leucorrhoea; excoriating yellowish, offensive, profuse, running down the legs. Mammae swollen, aching. Nipples itch.

Respiratory

      Hacking cough, with sticky white sputum better drinking cold water.

Back

      Tired feeling in lower part of the back.

Extremities

      Tired and numb feeling in legs and popliteae.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
