Lac caninum


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Lac Caninum in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      Milk of bitch acts upon THROAT, NERVES and female genital organs. It causes oversensitiveness of NERvES producing restlessness, nervousness, prostration and abnormal sensations; cannot bear one part of her body to touch the other; must keep even her fingers apart. SYMPTOMS ALTERNATE SIDES. Symptoms go from right to left then back again or reverse; throat, ovaries, skin troubles etc. Glistening parts; inflamed, ulcers etc. It dries up milk in women who cannot nurse the baby. Diphtheria and diphtheritic paralysis. Ozena. Erratic pains; or disposition of symptoms. Results of fall.

Worse

      TOUCH. Jar. During menses. Cold air, wind or drafts. Morning of one day and evening of the next. After sleep.

Better

      Open air. Cold drinks.

Mind

      Full of imaginations; horrid; of snakes; vermin. Very forgetful; makes mistakes in writing and speaking. Every symptom seems a settled disease; which is incurable. Fear of disease; of falling downstairs. Child cross and irritable, screams all the time esp. at night. Despondent. Attacks of rage. Hysteria at the height of sexual orgasm. Feels as if walking on air or of not touching the bed when lying down. Thinks himself of little consequence. Absent minded. Imagines that he wears someone else’s nose. Thinks that whatever she says is a lie. Fits; of weeping. One’s body seems disgusting.

Head

      Aches change side. Blurred vision. Nausea, and vomiting, at the height of attack of headache, which is worse by noise, talking, better by quiet. As if brain were alternately contracted and relaxed.

Eyes

      Sees faces before her eyes worse in the dark. Sees vermins, creeping things. Eyelids heavy.

Ears

      Noises in ears. Reverberations of voice, as if speaking in a large empty room. Sound seems very far off. Deafness from hereditary syphilis.

Nose

      Coryza_one nostril stuffed up, other free and discharging. Profuse nocturnal nasal discharge, purulent, staining pillow greenish yellow. Fluids escape through nose, while drinking. Cracks in alae nasi. Smell of flowers seems to send chill over her.

Face

      Pale, careworn, anxious. Jaws crack while eating.

Mouth

      Tongue coated white, with bright red edges. Putrid taste worse sweets. Talking difficult, talks through the nose (nervous throat affections). Drooling in diphtheria (saliva drops down). Tongue stiff. Cracks in corners of the mouth. Stutters when talking fast; has to speak slowly. Salivation.

Throat

      SORE; has glistening patches of china whiteness; or red glistening; tonsillitis and diphtheria; symptoms change repeatedly from side to side; better by cold drinks, or warm drinks, but worse empty swallowing. Sore throat beginning and ending with menses. Swallowing difficult worse solids; pain extends to ears.

Stomach

      Craves; milk and drinks much of it; highly seasoned dishes. Aversion to liquids esp. water; anything sweet. Sinking at epigastrium with nausea. Salty food only tastes natural. Nausea better eructations. Everything except fish makes her Worse.

Urinary

      Urine scanty, infrequent. Urination once only in twenty-four hours then copiously, but with some difficulty and slight irritation. Nocturnal enuresis (specific). Bladder seems full after urination.

Female

      Menses; gushing; hot as fire; too early; bright red; profuse; green; or of ammoniacal odour. Breast swollen, painful worse least jar; has to hold breast firmly when going up and down; before menses; better on appearance of menses. Constant pain in nipples. Flatus from vagina. DRIES UP MILK. Galactorrhoea. Milk scanty. Leucorrhoea; profuse; during day, none at night; worse standing and walking. Sexual organs extremely excited, worse by putting hand on breast; pressure on vulva while sitting, or slight friction caused by walking.

Respiratory

      Hoarseness during menses. Cough from constant tickling in the throat. Clavicles sore to touch.

Heart

      Pain when going up and down the stairs.

Neck and Back

      Stiffness of neck. Spine aches from base of brain to coccyx; very sensitive to touch or pressure. Cold creeping down back. Cramp in feet.

Extremities

      Sciatica. Limbs cold to knees. Constant pain right hip. Rheumatic pains shifting from one side to other. Heels sore.

Sleep

      Dreams of snakes. Lies with one leg flexed and other stretched. Dreams of urinating. Wakes at night with a sensation as if bed was in motion.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
