Caulophyllum


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Caulophyllum in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      It is a woman’s, as well as rheumatic remedy esp. acting on small joints. It causes ERRATIC PAINS flying about from place to place, drawing, cramping, shooting, rheumatic in character; ending in neck which gets stiff. Many of the complaints are due to uterine disorders. Internal tremors, with weakness. Want of tonicity in womb. Hysterical or epileptiform spasms at puberty, during dysmenorrhoea. Paraplegia, after child birth. Exhaustion. General debility. Chorea at puberty.

Mind

      Fretful and fearsome. Nervous. Excitable. Easily displeased.

Head

      Aches from uterine or spinal troubles, with pressure behind the eyes worse stooping, from light, from noon to night.

Face

      Moth spots; on forehead, with leucorrhoea. Heavy upper lid has to raise them with fingers; leucorrhoea.

Mouth

      Aphthae. Thrush_(locally and internally).

Stomach

      Frequent gulping of sour, bitter fluid, with vertigo. Vomiting of uterine origin.

Female

      Violent, intermittent cramping pains, with little flow; dysmenorrhoea_uterus retroverted. LABOUR LIKE PAINS, FLY ABOUT to breast. In labour, the pains are WEAK OR IRREGULAR, they cease from exhaustion or they are too painful; false labour pains. Eases labour, when the patient is exhausted from a long continuance of labour. Habitual abortions; from want of tonicity of uterus. After pains; after protracted and exhausting labour. Os rigid, needle-like pains in cervix. Profuse acrid leucorrhoea; often in little girls. Menses late. Irritable vagina, spasmodic intense pains. Menorrhagia; after hasty labour, flow very profuse. Lochia, profuse and prolonged.

Neck and Back:

      Stiff. Head drawn to left.

Extremities

      Sore nodes on finger joints. Rheumatism of small joints. Cutting pain in fingers joints on closing hands. Aching sore lower limbs, before menses. Paraplegia after child birth.

Fever

      As if overfull of blood. High fever.

Skin

      Chloasma; on neck.

Worse

      Pregnancy. Suppressed menses. Open air. Coffee.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
