Bovista


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Bovista in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      This fungus commonly known as puff ball, exerts its influence on CIRCULATION, causing relaxation of capillary system, thereby producing haemorrhagic diathesis. On skin it causes herpetic eruptions. There is a general puffiness; bloated condition of body surface, which produces easy indentations with blunt instrument (scissors etc.). Laxity esp. more felt in joints, which seem loose. Enlarged or swelled feeling in head, heart, etc. It is adapted to old maids, with palpitation; and stammering children. Multiple neuritis, with numbness and tingling. Asphyxia due to charcoal fumes. Effects of over-exertion, and application of tar locally. Nervous and weak jointed.

Worse

      Menses. Full moon. Hot weather. Getting warm. Cold food. Wine. Coffee.

Better

      Bending double. Hot food. Eating.

Mind

      Awkward in speech and action; drops things, stutters etc. Ineffective. Absent minded. Weak memory. Irritable, takes everything amiss. Laughs and cries alternately. Stares vacantly into space. Sad when alone. Quarrelsome.

Head

      Confusion on awakening. Sensation as if head were enlarging. As if wedge is pressed in occiput. Staggering, confusion and numbness in head, after coition. Itching of the scalp worse warmth.

Heart

      Visible palpitation of heart; of old maids. Palpitation as if heart working in water. Palpitation, with tremor of hands, worse bathing, excitement.

Eyes

      Objects seem to be nearer than they really are. Staring at one point. Loss of vision from paralysis of optic nerve.

Ears

      Boil in right ear, with pain worse swallowing. Discharge of foetid pus. Hearing indistinct, misunderstands much that is spoken.

Nose

      Stringy, tough discharge from nose. Nose stopped up; cannot breathe, worse lying down. Scurfs and crusts about nostrils. Bleeding early in the morning; (during sleep); few drops escape on sneezing.

Face

      Cheeks and lips swollen. Crusts about corners of mouth. Acne worse in summer or use of cosmetics. Twitching of muscles, before asthma. Lips cracked, crusty.

Mouth

      Numb. Increases saliva. Gums bleed easily on sucking them. Cutting pain in tongue; before asthma.

Stomach

      Sensation as of a lump of ice. Nausea better breakfast. Vomits watery fluid.

Abdomen

      Colic, with bright red urine better eating and bending double. Diarrhoea worse during and before menses. Cannot bear tight clothing around the waist. Stitches through perineum towards rectum and genitals. Chronic diarrhoea of old people worse night, early morning. First portion of stool is hard; latter part thin and watery.

Urinary Organs

      Frequent desire to urinate, even immediately after urination (Diabetes Mellitus).

Male

      After coition, reeling and confusion in head. Sexual desire increased.

Female

      Voluptuous sensation. Menses; early, oozing, every two weeks, more at night; less while moving. Occasional show between the periods. Parovarian cyst. Thick, acrid, yellow-green leucorrhoea, leaving green spots on linen worse while walking; after menses. Jaundice of new born.

Respiratory organs

      Shortness of breath on moving the arms. Viscid expectoration. Spasmodic laughing and crying, with asthma.

Neck and Back:

      Pain in the back with heaviness, after stooping. Itching coccyx.

Extremities

      Great weakness of all joints. Weakness; clumsiness with her hands. Heavy painful legs. Oedematous swelling of (right) foot even years after a sprain. Sweat in axilla; onion like. Oedema of joints after fracture. Weak hands.

Fever

      Chill with pain.

Skin

      Blunt instruments leave a deep impression. Itching eruptions; oozing; forming thick crusts or scabs, with pus beneath. Shooting pain in corns and warts. Urticaria covering whole body, with diarrhoea or metrorrhagia. Pellagra. Eczema.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
