J. Ellis Barker Unfortunately, cures by “a specific” are extremely unreliable because the cases described may have been picked out of over a hundred cases and of these the large majority may not have been benefited by the routine treatment described, but possibly gravely injured.
The competent use of a large Repertory requires lengthy study and guidance, and I would recommend the publishers, Messrs. Ehrhart & Karl, Chicago, to produce a short book or pamphlet, to be sold at a low price, such as a IS., giving the necessary guidance to novices. No such guidance is given in the volume itself.
Unfortunately, much time had elapsed between the time when the original infection took place and the discovery of the disease. In the meantime serious injury had been done to the man, and he had transmitted the disease to his wife. This suggested to me the possibility of a syphilitic infection.
My brain, which I used to think was shrinking, has swelled out again, and is functioning properly. So I really think that you have rejuvenated me. Many thanks for what you have done”. Possibly he was too optimistic in his assertion that he was cured by a single months treatment.
There is in homeopathy no single remedy for sleeplessness. Each case has to be investigated on its merits. If the constitutional symptoms of the patient call for Sulphur, or Nux vomica. The Sulphur patient cannot stand heat, feels a sinking at 11 oclock in the morning, dislikes washing, is prone to skin eruptions.
Pyrogen is invaluable for blood poisoning. A billionth of a grain given twice a day obviously saved the situation in the case of this child. The lack of knowledge of the orthodox practitioner was pitiful. By the surgical treatment of tonsils, right ear and hernia, the constitutional condition of the child would not have been improved.
It is the boast of homeopathy that the wonderful art and science discovered by Hahnemann has cured tens of thousands of cases pronounced absolutely incurable by orthodox medicine. That may be seen from homeopathic literature. Treatment like this is, or ought to be, familiar to every homeopathic prescriber.
If the man collapses and dies in consequence of this searching treatment, one need not be surprised. The strain involved upon the organs by such a treatment is terrific. In consequence, the Evening Standard will be responsible for innumerable cases of avoidable disease and death.
All the lay healers manipulating surgeons, osteopaths, herbalists, etc., were described as ridiculous, and more or less dangerous quacks, and some of the grossest examples of their ignorance were contemptuously quoted. I am quite sure if Hunter were alive now he would highly approve of homeopathy.
Doctors and specialists frequently assert that for enlarged prostates the only cure is by operation. A prostate operation is dangerous and unsatisfactory. In a large percentage death or permanent invalidism ensue. In most cases a prostate operation is quite unnecessary.
Where there is anaemia, Ferrum should be remembered, and where there is great emaciation, Secale should be thought of. Sulphur is beneficial in most cases of Enteroptosis, particularly where there is an impure skin, a feeling of sinking at eleven oclock in the morning and dislike of washing.
That saves trouble. But diabetes, and every other disease, is curable only if the prescriber enquires carefully into all the symptoms and into the causation of the disorder, and deals with these factors instead of prescribing mechanically Insulin for all diabetes cases. No two cases of diabetes are alike, and the same applies to every other disease known to medical science.
Unfortunately, there were complications. Mr. T. had had prostatic trouble for ten years. The homoeopathic doctor who lived in the neighbourhood and who called in every day prescribed Hexamine etc. The patient collapsed and died, and I much fear that his end was hastened or caused by the incredible treatment he had received before I was consulted by his daughter.
My complexion is much clearer.” On August 6th he said: “The irritation is almost gone.” In October 19th he told me: “I am leased to say that I am still improving. I think the Thuja pills suited me best.” Later on he called on me, and I not only found that the skin complaint had completely gone, but that he was marvellously improved in general health.
The diseases due or aggravated by constipation are innumerable. Twenty-three between ago Hippocrates pointed and advised the treatment of the alienated with purges. Cancer and constipation undoubtedly go hand in hand.
The patient must be relieved promptly, otherwise he will leave for the orthodox doctor. I have seen innumerable failures among the single doses and high potency practitioners, failures due to their trying to do the almost impossible. To give an ordinary example: Syphilitics suffer particularly at night.
The book will undoubtedly be of great interest to the relatively small number of people who are willing to study hard in order to obtain a close view of the authors conclusions and recommendations. I will now quote some passages from this book which will be of value and of interest to the readers.
Many sick people may be brought back to health by intensive bran feeding. I have given a diet rich in bran to thousands of people with the most wonderful results, and I give herewith a few recipes for very palatable cakes, biscuits, etc. Cream the butter and sugar together, add the egg and add bran slowly.
Dr. Hopewell-Ash recommends for sleeplessness “heroic doses of narcotic drugs”. I do not know why unduly large doses are called “heroic”. If there is is any heroism, it is not shown by the doctor, who injures his patient, put by the unfortunate patient who blindly swallows large doses of poisonous drugs, believing that his doctor knows his business.
“People are continually remarking how much better I look. The last three weeks I have had quite a strenuous time for me, packing everything and helping in our removal. So I am very glad and thankful to feel as well as I do. The breathing is never quite normal.”
The mother was delighted on her return and said to me I know you are more to Esme than I am. Do you wonder when you consider the difference in the treatment? This child has grown up perfectly healthy and is now happily married.
If a case is carefully taken and the right symptoms are ascertained the homeopath can treat with wonderful success patients whom he cannot see for some reason or other. Of course it remains to be seen whether Mrs. R will get completely well or not.
The question is whether Aluminium taken in small doses in the food, day after day, year after year, is or is not injurious and the experience of many doctors, both homeopathic and orthodox, distinctly shows that Aluminium is dangerous. Myers and Morrison investigated the amounts of Aluminium in the tissues of normal dogs.
My admonitions to take his case more seriously, to give me adequate details about his symptoms, and to let me know which of my remedies had done him the most good were unavailing. Practically the only treatment known to orthodox medicine in case of dropsy is tapping.
Cough, kidney pain, sleeplessness and bladder trouble disappeared, but the old looked anaemic, was restless, and complained about palpitations which are frequently found in the anaemic because the heart is starved of food. The cure evidently held good.

This country fought against the tyranny of her invaders, against the Spanish World Empire, against the Napoleonic world empire, and against Germany when she tried to subdue the world. The thing is scandalous and cries to Heaven.
These powerful rays are dangerous. Consumptives are greatly benefited by sunlight and open air, but every doctor and attendant employed at the open-air sanatoria is aware that reckless exposure to the powerful sun- rays will terribly aggravate the disease.
The deadly poisons carried by doctors serve the purpose of relieving pain and giving sleep. It is the doctors proud privilege to relieve the suffering. The homoeopathic prescriber does not treat the name of a disease, such as insomnia.
A sallow complexion, large or mattery pimples and other disfiguring eruptions, of which the number is legion, proclaim poor health or disease. It cannot be too strongly impressed upon readers that a good skin and complexion cannot be bought for cash.
Skin diseases are not very appetizing, but you can make money in comfort. If the right medicine has been found, the experienced homoeopath gives the same medicine in a higher potency. In obscure cases it is always advisable to examine the body as a whole.

The orthodox books on treatment point out the danger of carbuncles and the treatment recommended consists in either complete excision of the whole infected area wide of the disease. The most dangerous form of boil is anthrax.
The body endeavours to eliminate poisons in various ways, by producing a diarrhoea, an abscess, profuse perspiration, a skin eruption, etc. Many of the most serious diseases are accompanied by a skin eruption, such as measles, scarlatina, etc. A skin disease comes from the inside and should be treated from the inside.
The present tendency of orthodox medicine with its mania for dangerous subcutaneous treatments and for largely necessary operations is disastrous to the medical profession. It is a well-known fact that numerous doctors make a good living by this ghastly and sordid practice. Hence homeopathy has a most wonderful chance.
“Three main groups of symptoms are distinctly discernible, namely, gastro-intestinal, cutaneous and general. In the first group of outstanding feature is constipation. The only conclusive experiments are experiments on human beings.
Many of this sufferers explained to me, that they had suffered with their feet for years or decades and that they had been treated in vain by the greatest specialists. Customers are persuaded to wear shoes which are too small or too large, too narrow or too wide, etc.
Garlic is most easily taken cut up small in milk, or boiled in milk, but the question is whether the curative substances are not damaged by the boiling. That tradition which is based on thousands of years of continued experience cannot be regarded.
While orthodox physicians declare that a patient suffers from a disease of this or that organ, homoeopaths try to diagnose not the disease but the remedy, following Paracelsus, who taught that there were diseases such as Arsenic disease, Mercury disease, Sulphur disease, diseases which cried out for Arsenic, Mercury, Sulphur, etc.
FOR more than a century the question of potencies has been a stone of stumbling to homoeopaths. There are high potency men, low potency men, medium potency men and all potency men. However, the risk had been too great. She ought to have been given a lower potency, perhaps the 200th.
It was first triturated during five minutes and then for a whole hour. After the five minutes trituration the drug was almost white. After an hours trituration it had assumed a deep red colour. It was heartening to see the interest with which this demonstration was watched by those present.
Orthodox medicine has practically no treatment for this very frequent condition. Patients with an enlarged prostate are recommended to see a surgeon, and frequently the bladder is opened surgically and the enlarged prostate is taken out. However, he is still alive and goes about as usual.
CEREBOS, a very elegant looking table salt, is used every day by millions of people. It is particularly applicable to the salts produced by the Cerebos Company and I trust that the Ministry will act without delay for the protection of the public.
When allopathy has failed, homoeopathy is called in. I was asked to prescribe. Because of the salivation I gave the animal a few doses of Mercurius solubilis 3x, but I did not see any special progress.Naturally the cat had a dull and staring coat. Disregarding the mouth symptoms, I gave him Arsenic 3x, and to increase its appetite I gave him Thyroid 2x.
The homeopath is in a vastly superior position. He treats every disease, including, of course, influenza, according to the symptoms observed in the patient, without enquiring overmuch into the official designation of the complaint. On improvement, doses should be given less frequently.
In the best interests of homeopathy, this very real problem should be tackled, and until this difficulty is overcome, the most carefully worked out prescription may be of no avail unless the source of drug supply is unimpeachable. Alcohol is added as a rule for keeping purposes.
CONSTIPATION and civilization go hand in hand. In fact it may be said that constipation is a disease of civilization and it is an exceedingly serious disease, for chronic constipation leads to self-poisoning, leads to the fouling of the blood stream and thereby causes innumerable diseases, and aggravates every disease known to medical science.
I habitually explain to patients that far more pressure is required to drive a thick liquid through a given system of pipes than a thin liquid. “Report progress once a week and act with wise discrimination, not with mechanical obedience to these directions, for no one understands the working of your body better than you do yourself.
Cheese one of the most concentrated of foods. According to the professors of dietetics, whom opinions are of no particular value or interest to anyone possessed of common sense, it is very rich in protein, and is a food far more concentrated than meat, eggs and so forth.

The most extraordinary feature about these new remedies is that, according to Dr. Bach, they should not be prescribed on those symptoms with which orthodox physicians and homeopaths are familiar, but on the broadest indications of mind and character.It should be read in conjunction with Dr. Bachs article.
THE ANIMALS PAGES. In view of my failure, I proceeded to examine the dog. I heard that he had not lost his appetite, but I was amazed at the violence of the cough which had a peculiar and striking characteristic. In breathing out, the dog emptied his lungs of air very thoroughly and his breath produced within his chest a very loud noise resembling that of a saw used for sawing up tough wood.

THE people throughout the world have revolted against “scientific” medicine, which acts with dangerous subcutaneous injections, dangerous, benumbing and habit-creating drugs given in large doses and unnecessary surgical operations. Many a good man has become a physical and mental wreck for the want of this simple knowledge.
The cancer problem is monopolized by researchers and surgeon, who loudly proclaim that they alone can solve it. We have been told ad nauseam that “cancer is incurable except by surgery.”Unfortunately orthodox medicine refuses to examine the cancer cures of homeopaths, and hopes to find “a specific” for all cancer cases.
It is to be hoped that the numerous readers of “HEAL THYSELF” will be cautious and will take care of my warning. In a decade or so there will probably be a large crop of sunbathers sun cancers, a disease which is easily avoidable.
Instead of making a futile personal examination which had been done probably very well by number of doctors and surgeons, I enquired about the past history of the boy, what started the trouble, or what incident preceded it, such as a fall, injury, fright, illness, etc.
WE are told that the fruits of the early are the most wholesome food and they are undoubtedly the most delicious. What can be more attractive and more tasty than a ripe peach, a luscious pear, a delicate grape, a handful of perfect cherries ?

A CENTURY OF MEDICAL DISGRACE. In his presidential address, Lord Dawson of Penn described in eloquent and resounding sentences the progress of medicine in the course of the last century. It is true vast changes have taken place. Patients are no longer bled to death, nor are they tortured by vigorous blistering, burning with red hot irons, huge doses of mercury, which were given until the unfortunate sufferers spat out their teeth, etc.
Some months ago I heard of a London homoeopath, and I consulted him. Instead of examining all my organs, he enquired with kindly sympathy and great thoroughness into every aspect of my life. He then gave me a diet and some sugar pills and I have become a totally different woman. I have immensely improved in every direction.
THE STORY OF MY EYES. SOME time ago I went to my optician in the West End to have my eyes tested. The usual reading tests were not satisfactory. Following them, the very experienced optician examined my eyes very carefully with the ophthalmoscope, spending, I thought, an unusual length of time. When his examination was over, he looked at me in an embarrassed way and, after some hesitation, said: “I am afraid there is a peripheral opacity in both eyes.” “Good God, is it cataract?”
THE WORST ENEMIES OF HOMOEOPATHY. In fact the Association has become a tool of the British Homoeopathic Society for both organisations are managed, or mismanaged, by the same people. I have received complaints from all over the country that requests for lecturers, advice and monetary assistance have been refused. The British Homoeopathic Association has existed for thirty years.
OVERDOSING OF ANIMALS. “During long experience I have become aware of numerous cases of grave damage, or even of death, resulting from the inexpert and indiscriminate dosing of animals, particularly horses. Passing in review the examples of some thirty years and bearing in mind that it is only more serious cases which would come under my notice, I am painfully impressed by the wide prevalence of this practice, often dangerous, occasionally no doubt beneficial, but in the main, futile and expensive.
THE RECOGNITION OF OUR SCIENCE. In our present issue we print two contributions from Sir Bruce Bruce-Porter, the eminent physicians. In a previous number we had a valuable contribution by Sir Arbuthnot Lane, the great surgeon. We hope that many more of the leaders of orthodoxy will contribute to our pages, will show their sympathy, and will become interested in our methods.
AN ALLOPATHIC DOCTORS EXPERIENCE OF HOMOEOPATHY. You may perhaps recall to mind that I wrote to you a few months ago begging your help to be put into touch with a homoeopathic practitioner whom I could consult. Since then, I have been under homoeopathic treatment, and I feel I am in duty bound to testify to the decided benefit I have derived under this treatment.
THE ANIMALS PAGES. Many town dogs suffer with their eyes. Inflammation, abundance of phlegm, are very frequent, and blindness is found in large numbers of dogs. Blindness is often caused by constipation, which in turn is created by the soft diet of civilisation. A dog whose eyes begin to show an opacity should be given an abundance of vegetables and liquid paraffin to establish free bowel action.
A RARE CHRONIC CASE OF CHOREA. Nature records in the eye, acute and inflammatory changes. It is possible even to foretell from the eye the advent of an acute critical illness. Catarrhal conditions are clearly manifested in the blue iris by white lines or cloudings, and in the brown iris by a “whitening” of the original brown of the iris. Chronic destructive conditions such as exist in cancer are clearly shown in the iris by dark spots or marks.
DIET OR DRUGS. EVERY good homoeopath is an enthusiast for homoeopathy, for he knows from experience that the wonderful medicines employed by him will cure rapidly, pleasantly, and permanently numerous diseases and disorders which have been declared “absolutely incurable” by leading orthodox physicians and specialists. The wonderful successes which one has with homoeopathic remedies, given in infinitely small doses, are apt to blind one to the supreme importance of diet and other commonplace factors.
CHILDBED FEVER CURED WITH SULPHUR. I had a case of childbed fever with sepsis. The patient was a lady of twenty-two years, and had had her second baby. Her delivery had been normal, but she developed high fever and had rigors and flushes of heat and outbreaks of sweating. She complained of bad headaches, her abdomen was exquisitely tender, she had pain all over the body, her urine was very thick and concentrated, there had been no stools for three days, and her discharges were scanty and very offensive.
The average orthodox doctor pays no attention to diet– or to anything else. His whole aim is to make money–honestly if he can, but to make it. More than half of my talk to patients has reference to food.
A BRILLIANT CURE OF FACIAL NEURALGIA. According to the orthodox textbooks it is to be used in hysterical complaints, flatulence, etc., and the correct official dose is from ten to fifteen drops of the tincture. The lady took the medicine in the 3x strength, which means in doses of one-thousandth of a drop. This case shows the superiority of homoeopathic over allopathic treatment and the abysmal ignorance of orthodox doctors regarding the possibilities of the drugs they use.
HOW I LEARNED HOMOEOPATHY. When I started on my career, I laboriously worked up case after case in the manner described until the principal remedies became to me like familiar friends with well-known faces. As soon as one has arrived at the necessary familiarity, one asks a few questions and then one decides at once that the patient needs Aconite, Belladonna, Bryonia, Chamomilla, etc.
PAGES FOR BEGINNERS. Homoeopathy tries to cure safely, speedily and pleasantly by the use of small quantities of drugs. While the orthodox physician may order Sulphur, Charcoal, Magnesia, and other remedies reputed to be innocent by the teaspoonful, the Homoeopath will order the same medicines in extremely small quantities which, according to orthodox opinion, are quite ineffective.
HOMOEOPATHIC SENSITISATION. People who have treated for many years with large doses of allopathic drugs frequently do hot respond at all if given homoeopathic medicine, but if homoeopathic treatment is persevered with for some time normal reaction to homoeopathic remedies occurs, even in the most stubborn cases. Persistency is often rewarded only after months of endeavour.
THE ANIMALS PAGES. Upon my asking her whether the dog tried to get near the fire or away from the fire, she told me that she did not know. I therefore lit a gas fire, made her sit down close to it and call the dog, but the dog would not come. So I took hold of the little fellow and put him on her lap and bade her caress him. However, the dog jumped down and went to the window.
TWO BRILLIANT HEART CURES. Any doctor should know the name of this trouble, but homoeopaths do not treat the names of diseases, but people. We have a medicine which in large doses causes “constriction of the chest as if bound, hindering respiration. Heart constriction as from an iron band.” There could be no mistake about the remedy: Cactus 3. The patient returned in four days in joyful mood.
A DISTEMPER CASE. Restlessness would have indicated Rhus toxicodendron, but I imagined that the restlessness came from bone-ache and as the symptoms of throat, mouth, nose and eyes greatly resembled that form of human influenza which calls for Eupatorium perfoliatum, I gave him a few doses of that medicines IX with great benefit.
HOW THEY KEEP HOMOEOPATHY ALIVE. Very frequently a part of the general chemists shop is reserved to the homoeopathic department. I have looked in at numerous chemists in Germany and found that the assistants had quite a good notion about homoeopathic remedies, a good stock of homoeopathic medicines and a considerable quantity of popular homoeopathic literature, much of which is handed gratuitously to those interested in Homoeopathy, while there are numerous pamphlets which are sold at a normal price.
THE ANIMALS PAGE. As soon as a patient tells a good homoeopath that washing and bathing disagrees Sulphur leaps to the mind. I sent the lady a small box of sugar pilules moistened with a millionth of a grain of Sulphur in solution, and in a week pussy looked much brighter and happier and had resumed regular and frequent washings. Not infrequently cats are killed by their owners because they have stopped washing themselves.
HOW TO TREAT INFLUENZA. It is much better to get full information from larger books than the one mentioned. Every homoeopath must possess an adequate library if he wishes to study the wonderful science of healing, but he should begin with a popular book, which will gradually unfold to him the art of healing. A child has to spell and to read primers before the masterpieces of literature can be tackled.
THE STORY OF MY EYES. There are various other exercise and a very important method of relaxation which are used and which are some what difficult to describe. Perhaps it would be a mistake to give all the details in this place because readers might be induced to try these methods on themselves. That would be very inadvisable and possibly dangerous. No two cases are alike. Individual treatment is called for and expert guidance is needed. Otherwise there may be dangerous results.
A CASE OF IODINE POISONING. An otherwise healthy man had developed goitre and he had been given large quantities of iodine by the mouth, he had rubbed the outside of the goitre with iodine ointment and had swallowed large quantities of iodised slat with his food. As a result the goitre had grown to double the size, it had become as hard as stone, and yet the physician continued giving iodine, disregarding the disastrous results.
THE FUTURE OF HOMOEOPATHY. Some decades ago the benefits of homoeopathy were widely known through the lectures and writings of distinguished homoeopaths who did not disdain to address the people. Formerly, thousands of ladies treated their children, guided by little text-books and employing medicine chests filled with homoeopathic remedies, which were stocked by scores of homoeopathic chemists.
