This drug affects so deeply the liver that it is capable of producing in it cirrhosis of Laennecs type due to its action of hardness upon the biliary ducts; also active and passive congestions of the same liver giving place to hepatitis; cholecystitis, angiocholitis and catarrhal duodenitis. Cholestasis and predisposition to biliary lithiasis are produced by the prolonged use of Carduus marianus in massive doses.
Leptandra Virginica has been used empirically in the form of a decoction of fresh roots, for the purpose of producing purgative effects, originating copious transpirations, especially in pleurisies, having in the same way a popular reputation as a remedy for bilious fever and typhoid fever, notwithstanding its use as a cathartic it is considered very dangerous because it is capable of originating serious intestinal haemorrhages, vertigo, abortion and even death.
TUMBAVAQUEROS. Out of the groups of patients with different mental troubles selected by Dr. Ugalde, for the use of Tumbavaqueros, all of them improved very strikingly in their psychical state, reaching the following conclusions: Tumbavaqueros neither depresses the psychical function nor depresses the arterial tension having a sedative action, it is atoxic and it does not produce a habit.

Calcium is found in the skeleton, in the teeth, in the soft tissues of the organism, being an essential element in all the plasma of the tissues and cells. The normal organism contains 9.0 and 11.0 mg. of calcium per 100 c.c. of serum, which quantity varies in children, this proportion increasing or decreasing in them or in the adult according to their diverse troubles.
