ANAEMIA. When this body was convened in Atlantic City, I gave a history of the youngest and sickest case of anemia it has ever been my experience to have. That was two years ago, so now I want to present to you what appears to be perfectly healthy child. This case was presented two years ago and subsequently published in the Recorder, but perhaps you all have forgotten about it, so I shall briefly review it now.
ANTIMONIUM CRUDUM. In the grown-ups, the digestive tract will be acting up all the way from the mouth to the anus; and the extremities, the nails of the fingers and toes. Here it is just as important as Thuja or Graph. and, given that type of patient, it will clear up warts better than Thuja. Painless bed sores, they dread summer, or hear form a stove.
CLINICAL CASES. I have had several cases of Otitis Media this past winter that have gone on to suppuration, which is unusual. Generally I have cleared them up without a ruptured ear drum, with Bell., Puls., and Fe. phos., leading the list of remedies usually in the 200th potency. Finally with the help of a consultant I was introduced to Fe. phos. DMM, one dose, and since then I have not had a ruptured ear drum. This was a favorite potency of Dr.C.M. Boger.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. Personally, I feel that we have drifted so far down the rapids that there is no chance of our being rescued and all the satisfaction left for me is the poor one of saying, “I told you so”. Now what can we offer the masses attractive enough to lure them from the trap they are headed for in the Wagner-Murray- Dingle bill?.
ASTHMA. There is no secret about these cures; it is just pure Hahnemannian Homoeopathy. Lots depend on carefully taken case histories. The Organon tells you how to do it, and Kents Philosophy makes the Organon easier. Dont overlook Kents chapter on the second prescription; many cures are spoiled by that second prescription. Psora, Sycosis, Syphilis: Lots of homoeopaths do not believe in these hereditary causes.
I went to tell about some cures I have made where careful case- taking has given me the revealing causes for their ailments, thereby pointing the way to the correct remedy and a cure. These days it is nothing unusual to find that the stranger in your office has come to you from a clinic or a long line of “Specialists”, so the following cases are all failures of the “Top Notchers” in the medical profession.
Homoeopathic literature for many years past is replete with clinical case showing the successful handling of this type of surgery the homoeopathic way (in fact, I have myself contributed some of them) and I and many others in this society have abundant proof that it is as right as rain. So now I ask you to swallow your prejudices, set aside your fear, and try the old and reliable homoeopathic law.
A great many doctors do not seem to know that there is a place where they may be taught good homoeopathy, so for your information I want to tell you about the International Hahnemannian Associations Postgraduate School (American Foundation for Homoeopathy). It holds a six weeks course every summer. They teach homoeopathic philosophy, repertory, case taking and materia medica.
Better brush up on this deep subject and cut down on the percentage of those patients who stop coming to you because you have failed to benefit them. Dont begrudge the time it takes to get all the history because there are other patients waiting to see you, or friend wife wants to step out to a show, or you have a date to play bridge at the club.
Each of which is subdivided into three grades; or first, second and third degree. Now, get this classification and dont forget it, because it is vital, if we are even going to be able to take a case and by our analysis of its symptoms, determine which remedy is the similimum. A General Symptom is one that belongs to the whole patient, a symptom that predicates the patient himself.
Laryngitis, deep hoarse rough cough from a tickle in the larynx,or deep down under the sternum, shortness of breath, respiration in wave-like expansions, asthma, cough from an unendurable tickling through the whole chest with great weakness and emaciation. Tumultuous, irregular or intermittent pulse, visible pulsations of abdominal aorta, jugular, and especially so of the temporal artery, palpitation aggravated by the least exertion.
I was writing about a remedy that I do not know anything about myself. Dr. Roberts asked me to do that. I went to Herings Guiding Symptoms, Clarkes Dictionary, and one or two remote places where it had been brought up in discussion that I was able to find. The thing that struck me most forcibly was that little list that I gave you there if unusual conditions to which it seems to be applicable.
The old doctor that didnt recognize his Rhus symptoms is probably one of these fellows that dont attend meetings like these; he doesnt get out to the state and national societies. I dont know of any better way of getting out of the rut than attending these meetings.
Previous to this awakening, I was using as much allopathy as homoeopathy and thought nothing of it. But when I began to study Hahnemanns writings and those who had made a name for themselves as true followers of his teachings, I discarded all adjuvants of a remedial source and gave the single dose, following Hahnemanns teachings.
Prostatic cases are so often referred to the surgeon because the doctor has failed to sufficiently relieve the patient with his remedies, and in cases of gonorrhoea they resort to injections and other drastic measures rather than depend on their potentized remedy. Surgery today is not so uniformly bad as it was in the day when the whole gland was removed.
Now for a few general rules that I give my patients: The most important one of all is the stopping of all local measures. This may include the removal of a pessary worn to support a misplaced uterus, or another kind of pessary used to prevent conception; or the stopping of a dangerously strong antiseptic solution that they may be using as a douche after intercourse.
These finer details and individualities, these shades of variation and modalities are the only bases upon which to obtain the requisite knowledge of drugs or of good prescribing. So in disease, we must know its objective and subjective symptoms, its method and manner of progression; then we must know the drugs that will produce such symptoms, conditions and modalities.
An interesting comment on this case would be”: Was Lyc. the remedy from the first? Would it have done faster work? Of course nobody can positively say now,nut I have learned to to start my chronic cases of on lyc. especially if there is a suitable complement like puls., such as we had in this case.
Carelessness in selectivity is the reason for the crowded conditions in all our penal, and other, institutions. Suppressive medications does not and cannot meet the requirements satisfactorily. Pure homoeopathy is the only real cure for a situation that is world wide and steadily progressing to a place where it is arousing an interest that will bring many theories to the front.
The pathetic side of it is that we are supposed to be wizards and establish “harmony within” pronto. So many of these cases result in disaster that it is no wonder we high potency men dread to see them appear. The handling of these cases is nearly always a problem. If it is a real emergency, a palliative remedy is justified. If time can be taken the only thing to do is to wait until the turmoil subsides.
In trying to visualize the Apocyanum patient we expect to see a low-spirited, nervous, bewildered patient, with a bloated face, dropsical, hydrocephalic, with hydrothorax and abdominal ascites, and very likely rheumatic. In infants there is hydrocephalus, with restlessness, involuntary movements of one arm or one leg, harsh dry skin, thirst, but water is soon vomited, urine nearly suppressed, bowels loose, perhaps with involuntary movements.
Hahnemann says somewhere in his writings,”If physicians do not carefully practice what I teach, let them not boas of being followers, and above all, let them not expect to be successful in their treatment”. The fundamental rule in treating chronic diseases is this : To let the carefully selected homoeopathic act as long as it is capable of exercising influence, and there is a visible improvement going on in the system.
In reviewing may failures and successes, in thirty years of practice, there have been two large outstanding principles of homoeopathic philosophy involved so often, that I am persuaded to put on record here the things that seem to me are essential, in carrying to successful finish any of he chronic diseases which come to us for treatment.
