Collinsonia canadensis. Stone root. N.O.Labiatae. A tincture from the fresh root.

THERAPEUTICS.

COLLINSONIA is clinically a pelvic remedy. It is extensively used for piles, with sticking pain in the rectum and associated constipation and flatulent colic, the motion being hard, like stones. Occasionally there is dysentery-like stools with tenesmus. The piles are painful and bleeding, with an uncomfortable feeling of a crack or of foreign bodies like small sticks or sand irritating the anus.

In piles of pregnancy, accompanied by pruritus, it is extremely useful. It has been recommended in proctitis. A frontal headache is a collinsonia feature, with flushing of face, nausea, cutting pain in lower belly, and faintness followed by an action of the bowels. Mucus, blood and straining may accompany the action.

Palpitation in haemorrhoidal subjects, with a weak and rapid pulse and tendency to fainting, would be confirmatory. the cardiac symptoms are sometimes a conspicuous feature. Pruritus ani et vulvae, and dark red swelling of vulva during pregnancy, may require collinsonia.

It has been used for membranous dysmenorrhoea and for prolapsus uteri et recti without any clear indications; and similarly in men for varicocele and spermatorrhoea. Neuralgic and rheumatic pains in limbs, upper and lower, especially when sitting, have been successfully treated by collinsonia when the rectal symptoms and palpitation were also present. The lower limbs feel to be enlarged, heavy, hot, numb and tingling.
